When you're talking about infectious diseases to a broad audience, be careful not to be seen as "Team Pathogen". Don't express happiness or amusement when you observe the microbe evading our defences.
@leomrtns I also try to be careful about this when teaching about molecular evolution in cancers.

@leomrtns I get that with human or animal pathogens, but pretty sure I’ve sat in plenty of plant pathology seminars where describing how the host’s defences are breached might even be described with glee? I mean, some of this stuff is really cool.

Sometimes this is resistances the presenter or their colleagues worked very hard on to get into breeding/use too. On top of the obvious implications to the farmers/growers. But less personal all the same?
