I think before we try a Dyson sphere around a star we should start with something small and simple like a magnetar. We can harness some of that magnetic rotor and the Dyson stator can just give us simple free energy
@NanoRaptor I need a artist's conception of this, stat
@vaurora @NanoRaptor Hit up Orion's Arm. There's probably art of such a thing in there somewhere (there are enough variants of Dyson spheres over there...)
@NanoRaptor I'm pretty sure that would either accelerate the Dyson sphere or ringworld until it pulls itself apart, or it'll induce eddy currents that would melt whatever you made it out of.
@StarkRG @NanoRaptor Not to worry, the magnetic fields are so strong that if you can get close enough to see the magnetar with your naked eyes your eyeballs (and all the atomic nuclei in them, and the rest of your body, and your spaceship) will have been spaghettified.
@cstross @NanoRaptor Oooh, I like spaghetti. Is grated parmesan provided or do you have to bring your own?
@StarkRG @NanoRaptor within a few thousand kilometers of a magnetar you ARE your own parmesan!
@cstross @NanoRaptor Be the parmesan you want to eat in the world.
@cstross @StarkRG @NanoRaptor the magnatar's fields are so strong they literally polarize the quantum vacuum. Creates some strange effects!
@NanoRaptor and one heck of a vacuum
@NanoRaptor the tricky part is holding the coils still against the field
@NanoRaptor
#SciFi : Ken Macleod's Learning the World with the advancing wave of green stars points up the idea that the Dyson sphere is less a solid structure than an accumulation of habitats, machines etc.
(Sphere might not be the shape either)
Larry #Niven's #NeutronStar short story points up one problem of near-point masses, tidal forces. One's personal #RocheLimit is best avoided.
Niven again, and the #SmokeRing and #IntegralTrees is interesting wrt a neutron star and habitability.
@NanoRaptor New for 2028, the Nanorapter 2000, the world’s first MEV! (Magnetar Electric Vehicle)
@NanoRaptor what if, instead of around a star, shouldnt we just build one around earth? that would prevent a lot of tragedies down the line.
@codenaga @NanoRaptor
We fantasize space solar while fighting wars for oil on earth

@NanoRaptor

As long as the Dyson Sphere is not designed by the Dyson Company.

Still hunting for the adjustments on the Dyson upright vacuum cleaner, and just love breathing germ laden water aerosolized by Dyson hand dryers in public bathrooms. The best of British design,... I would hate to see the worst.

@NanoRaptor
1. Wait for Kessler syndrome to take hold
2. Go up there with a welder
3. Dyson sphere around the earth
4. ???
5. Glorious sci-fi future
@isaaclyman @NanoRaptor we definitely need this cozy video game
@isaaclyman @NanoRaptor "I flip satellites" as a shady profession in next decade.
You’ll need a thick suit, though.

@isaaclyman

That's not a Dyson sphere. The correct term for a metallic sphere around the earth is "preventive detention", and yes, the universe badly needs it.

@NanoRaptor

@isaaclyman @NanoRaptor All this is totally doable apart from step 2.

@isaaclyman @NanoRaptor
You don't even need a welder, two clean metal surfaces will attach if you press them together.

Cold welding - Wikipedia

@isaaclyman @NanoRaptor if we put a coil on a high enough pole (handwave techbro materials science something something) then any magnets in the passing debris should induce a current so we can harvest energy *plus* that will gradually slow the debris down until it deorbits
@isaaclyman @NanoRaptor But which side of the sphere so we want to be on?
@isaaclyman @NanoRaptor finally we can harvest all the earth’s radiant energy

@isaaclyman @NanoRaptor

I would suggest welding that stuff into a space elevator. We solve two problems at the time 😁

@NanoRaptor

Look who's being so fancy with a Dyson sphere. Maybe start more simple with a Bissel sphere or a Hoover sphere. Or perhaps an old-school Electrolux sphere.

@NanoRaptor uhm.... ok. I could do it by tomorrow at 10:00, but you know, you send no s**t in production on friday. It's the LAW.

Sorry for that.

@NanoRaptor they're concerned about global warming though so ...

just put the dyson sphere around the earth.
