Keeping money from going to the Harry Potter franchise isn’t just a symbolic gesture. It’s about preventing real harm to real people.

J.K. Rowling uses personal wealth to fund anti-trans org

This is where "Harry Potter" profits are going.

Advocate.com
@inthehands Proof, if anyone needed it, that extreme wealth is bad for your brain. Of all the good things Rowling could have done with her money, she does this. 🙄 🤪

@jillL
I don't know, I think I'd make a great billionaire. I'd buy a castle in Scotland and donate to wildcat rescues. And have a herd of house cats. And not have a social media. And leave trans people alone. Maybe even use some of that billions to give money to an org that's helpful to trans people.

This is the alternative universe JKR I wish we'd gotten.
@inthehands

@cambria @jillL @inthehands unless money really does rot the brain and you only think you'd do those things because you're not a billionaire.

😬

@rasmus91 @cambria @jillL @inthehands
I'd never become a billionaire because I'd never sit on the money that long. I'd be like, "Ooh, here's a charity that needs it!" or "Hey, that guy needs a new car for work," or "I bet I could revitalize this town by hiring a bunch of people, so let's see how that might work."

So I'd just never accrue the money in the first place.

@realtegan @cambria @jillL @inthehands and all that is probably much better for your soul or humanity or whatever you want to call it, than a billion $ in your portfolio

@rasmus91 @cambria @jillL @inthehands

Money, to me, is a means to an end - that end being security and happiness. Depending on the person and the society, security and happiness isn't all that expensive. Anything left over should be used to help other people into security and happiness, thus creating a world that's even more secure and happy.

Wanting more and more money is just an illness - a failure to understand when you have "enough". That's how money perverts and rots a person.

@realtegan @cambria @jillL @inthehands oh i agree.

If you have a house/home, means of transportation, food, some leisure time and enough air in the budget for the occasional family trip, why should you want more?

@rasmus91 @realtegan @cambria @jillL
The novelist Joseph Heller was at a party hosted by some…Rockefeller or whatever, let’s just say Rockefeller.

GUEST: Mr. Heller, doesn’t bother you that •you• wrote all these great novels but •he’s• the one who got all this money?

HELLER: No, I have something he’ll never have.

GUEST: What’s that??

HELLER: Enough.

@inthehands @rasmus91 @cambria @jillL

Thank you. This is *exactly* what I was talking about.

@realtegan @rasmus91 @cambria @jillL
It’s one of my all-time favorite stories. And it’s about money, but it’s not •just• about money.
@realtegan @rasmus91 @cambria @jillL @inthehands Exactly. It's not that money rots the brains of billionaires. It's that, to become a billionaire in the first place, you had to be extraordinarily evil and shallow in your choices of what to do with money.
@rasmus91
Or worse, think you _are doing_ those things. "I am helping people" * donates 0.000001% of wealth to money laundering scheme and brags about it.
@jillL @inthehands

@inthehands There's pirating the new Harry Potter series to keep money from going to Joanne.

There's not watching the series as a protest.

And then there's not watching the series just because you don't care about Harry Potter and never did.

But you're never gonna look at Nick Frost the same way again.

@xenotrope @inthehands

there is also not watching the new series cause you're not going to watch the same old story you already watched 15 years ago.

Time for a new original and better kid's franchise (minus ghoulish bigot billionaires).

@inthehands Hot Take: Joanne hasn't produced a good story since 2000. The first few Harry Potter installments were kind of interesting but the series quickly devolved after the novelty factor wore off and some of her more problematic ideology started shining through. I have been able to sample some of the newer "Fantastic Beasts" films and... Boy are they terrible. This is one boycott that will be easy to for me to follow (especially since I stopped wanting to give her money and attention around a decade ago).
@arazil @inthehands maybe u are not the demographics she plans to tap into...that stuff is for kids like 8 to 12 yo...
@fnord99 @arazil @inthehands even when I was a literal child I came to the same conclusion tbh. And anyway childrens media should not be shielded from legitimate artistic criticism just because people think children are too brain-dead to tell the difference between good & bad media. It turns out the "masses" of all ages are, which is why criticism can be useful & help consumers make better & more fulfilling choices about media instead of chugging down whatever slop is currently being pedaled.
That take isn’t all that hot.
I haven’t cared about Harry Potter since I was a kid and her books under the Psudonym Robert Galbraith weren’t very good either.
@Yog_Krakthulhu it stays a "hot take" considering millions of people continue to buy her books / films / video games / toys. It's not because you agree to a hot take that it makes it less hot ;)
It also says after 2000. Which the last Harry Potter book came out in 2007, which is close enough in my opinion. The movies would be based on those stories. Less people liked Fantastic Beasts, even less liked The Cursed Child. She didn’t write the video games. That’s just the Harry Potter stuff. So yeah it’s not very hot of a take wether or not I agree.
@Yog_Krakthulhu yeah and all the good ones were pre-2000, i.e. the first three books, four if we're being generous but the fourth was definitely where my 12-year-old self started going "maybe this sort of isn't good actually."
I enjoyed all of them as a kid, but I would never have put them in my top 10.

@inthehands Sony still offers me Harry Potter for free. I still refuse to play it, and I refuse to click on it. Anyone using my console is warned they are not allowed to install that shit on anything I own. As far as I'm concerned, that franchise is like cobalt. If I could block content by title, I would. It just occurred to me, I haven't checked if I can at least hide it from my PS Plus.

I would be mortified to have that shit on my account history or trophy list.

🫂️ for all y'alll 🏳️‍⚧️️

@inthehands It's worth noting, I otherwise try any game Sony tosses me as a freebie, no matter how trash. I wont touch the cobalt though!

@hellomiakoda @inthehands

It is extremely funny to me that Steam is offering it at 85% off. Given how big its launch was and how expensive it was to produce, seeing it degraded to shovelware prices so quickly is deeply hilarious.

(I haven't bought it and I won't, for the reasons you've outlined.)

@inthehands
Reading the first HP book, we're clearly meant to be on the side of the "freaks" (people with special abilities) and "mudbloods" (people who end up different from what they were assigned at birth) and the "animagi" (can literally change their form)

Now JKR is on the side of Aunt Petunia & Draco Malfoy

@bigblen

This.

I don't think JKR understands the community that they helped create.

I enjoyed reading the books at the time, as I like the SF&F genre. I would re-read them but I am also pro    and the two don't equate to me wanting to buy more from this franchise.

@inthehands

@bigblen @inthehands She sold her soul - If she ever had one - to the noseless one a long time ago.
@inthehands I like how that one sign replaces the O in her name with a drawing of an anus.

@inthehands TBF she's not the first author to support iffy shit.

What annoys me is: This woman could've had it all and die an icon if she had shut her mouth, not pick fights with a marginalized community, and go all contrarian to the far right when called out for her bullshit.

Was it better to support a covert bigot? IDK. But I do know that her actions ruined her legacy and harmed fun literature tools. It reframed her fun use of puns for names into distasteful slurs. I hope the remake flops.

@inthehands this is so despicable. I usually don't support LGBTQ or even care, but funding something anti is totally despicable
@epistomai @inthehands Sounds like you do care and support us, then! Thanks ❤️
@epistomai @inthehands LGBTs need support. Not bigots.
@canleaf @inthehands The other way around. The world needs no bigots, for whatever reason. If there were no bigotry, no support may be needed, not only for LGBTQ. Women could study in shahira countries, no hunger in North Korea and dictatorships, no harassment and racism in usa, and the list goes on and on
@epistomai @canleaf @inthehands so your solution is to pretend you live in an imaginary world where ineqyality never happened? 😒
@epistomai @inthehands Bigots are people who are spewing bigotry. They deserve boycotts.

@inthehands disgusting bourgeoisie parasite. She got rich- up from a teachers salary to *billions* thanks to Potter- and now she's using them to further the same dark ages nonsense trans folk have been dealing with SINCE the fucking dark ages.

All potter bullshit is banned in our home, and I have 2 children who would be big fans otherwise. We haven't given that nasty lady a dime in a decade or so, but... I did buy the original potter movies forever ago.

@inthehands I'd not even pirate TERFling's trash!
@inthehands Look at the pain in that face. Those eyes tell a tale. She is suffering. I am rather pleased about that, not only is she a transphobic hate mongering pathetic human but her stories are crap too. They were always crap. Half the ideas were knockoffs. Her other stories are cringe.

@inthehands

people like her and musk and their ilk could be living the most spectacular lives, but instead they wallow in hate and apply endless time energy and money making the lives of other people miserable in different ways

they are dangerous and pathetic

despicable

@inthehands
I know this point has been made before but Harry is her.

Aside from that one time he bought Ron a chocolate frog, despite having unlimited wealth and despite practically adopted and living with Ron's family, despite being written as feeling awkward when confronted by the comparative poverty, Harry does absolutely nothing to help Ron or his family. Their lot is to be poor, his is to be wealthy.

@Theriac Sooo... Through the books, she fantasised about being a male person with money..? 🤔

Quite remarkable 😅

@inthehands

@ElBeeToots @inthehands
she chose Robert Galbraith as her nom-de-plume when she tried to prove she could be a successful adult writer.

So perhaps?

@Theriac @ElBeeToots @inthehands Even the ”J.K.” is her wanting to pass as male.

So all her fortune is built upon her walking into the men’s room. Not that it should have been a men’s room, but it’s she herself saying she wants the separation.

@Theriac @inthehands Honestly this part has always bothered me so much. it was kind of supposed to be "don't make friends for their money" or sth but as someone who was helped by friends who were better off during hard times and who has helped friends when they were on hard times and I could... I can't imagine NOT doing that in some way seeing a friend in need.
(also I can't imagine being friends with someone for their money, but that's another thing).
@inthehands Maybrewe could make massive pro-trans fanfic for and with the non-hatng fans ...
@vreer
Fanfic in which major characters are trans is one of the few forms of public engagement with Harry Potter I can wholeheartedly condone — especially if it’s over the enraged objections of whatsherface.
@inthehands JKR has extreme F-U money already. She doesn't have to care about anyone's opinion. She is not Elon Musk rich, but she is rich enough to do whatever the hell she wants for the rest of her life.

@inthehands

has she mentioned anything about the Epstein files? or as silent about that as I think she's been.

she's not about protecting anyone, just hating on a few

@inthehands Rowling can't help it. She knows she's a shitty hack fanfic writer who plagiarized 'The Worst Witch' series of books, literally just turning the protagonist, Mildred, into a Harry Boy.

She's terribly afraid someone is going to realize she gender-flipped the protagonist, so the best smokescreen is to hate on trans people so no one could ever accuse her of being such a lazy cheap anti-women hack.

IIRC she also faked a rags to riches story about herself that wasn't entirely true.

@inthehands I mean, stop me if you've heard this one before. In the Worst Witch, ordinary girl Mildred gets told she's a witch and taken to the magic world. She hops a steam loco to a bit castle/school with twisting magical corridors. There's a wealthy blond girl antagonist that looks down on non-witches and lower=caste witches. a cheery old dean who plays favorites for Mildred, the potions teacher doesn't like her. She has two friends and a familiar...

Speaking of, sounding familiar yet?

@inthehands Her position is Trans Women are still men. No they aren't. I'd wager if you put 10 women up, Rowling would be unable to tell which are cis women and which are Trans.

@inthehands The money eventually becomes so large in a pile that it's power is timeless. It's like a lich's phylactery. If they gathered enough souls in the first place, of course they'll have it forever.

The systems in place are built to remove limits to the Epstein classes wealth.

@inthehands

So where is the transval? Southa frica?
