Why are public schools asking parents to pay fees?

Schools ask parents to contribute to basic supplies such as stationery and first aid supplies. The price tag can be four figures, per child, per year.

I hear of another cost imposed on poorer students' families: Better looking/higher priced uniforms.

As I hear it a committee of parents select the uniform design.

And select a higher cost school uniform as it "looks better".

But the parents on the committee are "higher disposable income" parents who don't feel the financial pressure that the decision will put on poorer families.
