Noting that multiple members of the Arkansas Duggar family, noted for its outspoken role in the Religious right, have now been arrested in child abuse charges, Sarah Stankorb looks at the "culture of warped power" that lies behind the Duggar story.
The Duggars are well known to follow and promote the abusive child-rearing practices of white evangelical leader Bill Gothard.
At the very heart of the unsavory Duggar story is child abuse fostered by religious ideologues. As Stankorb says,
"It’s wrenching to know how the impulse to protect and care for children was so twisted by systems that made the home a battlefield."
And:
"It’s a battlefield that mirrored the same sort of power that was asserted by figures like Gothard over families, and in turn, by some political figures trained by him, over a nation."
