No really, I am not kidding when I say that the data broker industry must be destroyed: https://www.npr.org/2026/03/25/nx-s1-5752369/ice-surveillance-data-brokers-congress-anthropic
@evacide This! I'd say "100 times this", but 100 is far too low!
@evacide I met a data broker once. Or a data miner, more accurately. At the strip club. I met a lot of enemies of the people at the strip club. Data miners, Facebook employees, "defense" contractors, etc. I wish I'd stolen from them more. They steal more than enough from us.
@ArcMother @evacide Sex work is a great way to meet horrible men. Never worked in a club, but, it makes sense, on the FSSW side I got a lot of lawyers, political sorts, some "defense" folks, a few tech employees, too.
Also wish I'd stolen from some of them more.
@ArcMother 'full service sex work'
@miss_rodent ahhh haven't heard that one. But yeah, that checks out.

@evacide
ohohh i still remember how big an issue it was when Germanys administration bought data about tax evaders…

https://www1.wdr.de/archiv/jahresrueckblick/steuercd342.html

(but even here i am pretty sure this level of protection is reserved for tax evaders - if they do it to identify trans people, people with mental illness etc there will be nobody to complain… yes that kind of society we have become)

ok not directly data brokers but a case where the state acts similarly buying data they otherwise are not allowed to aquire

@evacide AND everyone involved in it sent to prison. That second part is EQUALLY important. Otherwise they'll just do it again.
"We certainly wouldn't imagine a scenario where the police said, 'We're going to search your house. We don't have a warrant, but we paid your landlord $100 to give us a spare key. So now we're searching your house without a warrant,'" Laperruque said.
@evacide It would solve a mountain of problems.

@evacide It seems reasonable to -- at a *minimum* -- regulate them to the same extent as the OG data brokers, Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.

But making that business illegal would also be fine with me.

@evacide the irony of NPR’s cookie consent pop-up on this article that only shows because I’m logged in to a VPN.
@evacide I'm surprised we haven't had more stories about stalkers and tabloids buying personal data.
@evacide Pleasant thought. And feasible - once we revive our emaciated organic economy to pay the bills. Stand by...
@evacide Destroyed and all those who used said databrokers should be destroyed too or fined out of existence.

@evacide It's starting to happen over here in the UK too - getting a lot of targeted marketing shite in my mail - contacted one this morning to get my data 'supressed' so it wont be used again.

Even my local authority has handed total management of council tax data to a data bank, which includes voting registration...currently selling said data to debt collection agencies, who then use it to dig even deeper into your data, adding data points as it goes.

Absolutely they should be destroyed!

@evacide
how can i assist?

@evacide

Can we also add to that all the major tech companies? They need to go as well.

@evacide I'm not sure who would think you were joking
