"These [food system] vulnerabilities are exacerbated by the use of just-in-time #supplychains & the funnelling of much of the world’s #trade through a number of #chokepoints. Some people have long warned that the strait of #Hormuz, alongside the #Suez canal, #Turkish straits, #Panama canal & straits of #Malacca, are critical chokepoints, whose obstruction would threaten the flow of #food, #fertiliser, #fuel & other crucial #agricultural #commodities."
We’re letting big corporations gamble with our lives. Act now, or the food could run out

The fragility of the global food system fills me with dread – and the war with Iran has exposed just how close to collapse it is, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

"A crucial step is to encourage a shift to a plant-based diet. People struggle to see the relevance, but it’s simple. A plant-based diet requires far fewer #resources, including just a quarter of the land a standard western diet requires & much less #fertiliser & other inputs. Just as we make ourselves more energy-secure by switching from #fossilfuels to #renewables, we make ourselves more food-secure by switching from #animals to #plants."

@rmblaber1956 For many, I think the secret to success is small steps and inviting labels. Most people care about the issues, but relatively few find the "vegan" lable attractive. And too many early vegan options just weren't that good (wow, has this changed!).

I love the term "flexitarian" - readily appealing to many. And of course once you start down this path, many people discover that they just feel better making meatless choices!

@Nigel_Lake #Vegan has proved a step too far for me, although I like some vegan #foods. I'm a #vegetarian, rather than a vegan - I just can't do without my #eggs & #dairy, although I have tried. A much-reduced #meat diet, & one with a certain amount of #fish, would suit a lot of people, would be healthy, & good for the #planet! Mediterranean diet can reduce risk of stroke by up to 25%, long-term study suggests

Two-decade study indicates a diet rich in olive oil, nuts, seafood and vegetables can cut risk of every type of stroke
