The fragility of the global food system fills me with dread – and the war with Iran has exposed just how close to collapse it is, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

I don't like to feed fear too much, because it sometimes incapacitates people from taking action. However, the more I talk to people about the mechanics of the global food system, the more I believe that most people simply don't believe that we could see a collapse that makes virtually all commercial vendors of food run out of supply.
