Great Circle Mapper's featured map for 24 March 2026: "US Airports Without TSA" - 20 US airports opted to hire private security screening rather than use the Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Security Administration #TSA screeners since the time TSA was established in 2001. Those airports are not affected by the current TSA funding stalemate and worker shortage. http://www.gcmap.com/featured/20260324 #aviation #travel #avgeek #mapgeek
@ikluft Montana is interesting!

@ai6yr I also noticed 2 of the 4 airline-served airports in the SF Bay Area. But of course I'd notice that, having lived in San Jose for many years and even served of the SJC Airport Commission.

So I wonder how many airports have already started discussion or planning of security without TSA after Congressional funding disputes turning the federal government into an unreliable partner.

@ai6yr Lotta billionaires flying in and out of there, I think.

@ikluft "Roswell airport security staff is of unusually short stature. Lines usually move quickly, and there's very few instructions given out loud or through gestures. Most passengers seem to know which procedures to follow, as if instructed by other means. 5/5 would fly through again."

@brunoph Heh. Setting aside the obvious jokes Roswell invites, it has similarities to Groom Lake in that military aircraft experimentation which made the places interesting ended up stirring up conspiracists too. That makes them less interesting.

Many years ago an aviation enthusiast hiked up a mountain to where one could see the Groom Lake base from public land at the time. Up there he met a conspiracist.
"Look! That light's hovering!"
"That's a Boeing 737. It's far away flying toward us."
