I'm low key considering buying a #TV to watch my favorite shows and play some switch games With my daughter.
I never owned a TV and just want to stream and game
I'm also considering building a Linux TV thing (with #kodi?).
Is there a specific tech that's worth buying? Are there brands to avoid?
Are there dumb TV at all?
Please enlighten me

@openmastering Any TV is a dumb TV if you don't connect it to the net. My main advice is to go to a shop and try the interfaces to see what works best for you. The best picture in the world won't compensate for a UI that you hate or a remote control that hurts your hand.
@ingram @openmastering that's correct so far, but if you use #kodi, the TV's UI doesn't matter at all. You'll have plenty of skins to choose from.
Edit: I have no streaming experience with Kodi

@the_grue @openmastering Yep, that's a good way to keep control of what's on the telly. An RF remote control makes it quite convenient, and uses a USB dongle for the Kodi host. I've used a Raspberry Pi but they can be underpowered. Mini PCs from corporate/government computer refurb companies work well tooβ€”HP, Dell, Lenovo and Acer make them.

Plugging a laptop in and streaming off it works pretty well too.

@ingram
Thanks for the input. Could such mini PC handle 4k?
What do you mean with the USB dongle?
@the_grue

@openmastering @the_grue 4K would depend on the age of the PC, or would need RPi4 or 5. Best check on forums for that.

The RF remote and dongle is a convenient way of controlling Kodi. I found one online (AliExp most likely) that looks like a normal remote on the front and has a mini keyboard on the back. This is what I have: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/3353124/Rii-Mx3.html#manual

@openmastering if you have a raspberry pi kicking around: at least give LibreElec a try. I doubt you will find a quicker way to get something running.

Boots directly into Kodi. On a raspberry Pi you get to control it via CEC, so with your regular TV remote. I've been running it for years now (used to be OpenElec) and it's really good.
