Aight, #fediverse

Should I switch from #archLinux to #gentooLinux now, or wait until we definitively know what's going on with #systemd and #ageVerification before making that decision?

Maybe even a #linuxFromScratch base system running #flatpaks out the wazzoo?

@c401mh3 #ArchLinux now reportedly censoring people who criticize #AgeVerification and one guy named Dylan Taylor who is pushing it everywhere - he is the one who pushed it to #systemd and he is also trying to push it to #ArchInstall ... Plus #ArchLinux forum moderators delete all posts related to age verification debate. I don't know what the fuck they are trying to achieve, but they are destroying their reputation in real time. A lot of Arch users are furious.

Arch Linux Says Opposing Age Verification is Code of Conduct Violation

YouTube
@PeterSoukup don't likes age verification, links lunduke. That's my humor. Lol

@PeterSoukup @c401mh3 And your source for all of that is a Nazi youtuber whose only goal is pushing culture war nonsense into Linux?

But yes, they are moderating their forum, and these threads are not technical and usually end up with a ton of CoC violations, so I'm not surprised.

@qwertviop
Well, his statements are 100% verifiable - supported by links in his video and his twitter posts and his statements are perfectly reasonable, and in this specific video I see zero items that violate any ethical norms and he behaves like a nice guy, in one of his other videos he speaks against threats of violence and personal attacks. On the other hand here I see a guy throwing temper tantrums and calling people names. My bet is on Lunduke - a 100%.

@PeterSoukup Arch's CoC explicitly forbids controversial political discussions, ineffective discussions, and abuse/harassment of FOSS projects and developers. These threads usually lead to all three of these at once, so them getting deleted is not surprising to me at all.

And if you have been on his Xitter and still view him as a nice guy then you are 100% a fash too, so I'm ending this discussing and blocking you. Bye.

@qwertviop @PeterSoukup Felix is behaving like the typical far left: if they don’t agree on your take, they block you. I guess this is the way they imagine an harmonious society…
@PeterSoukup @c401mh3 Feel free to criticize age verification. Personally I hate the idea. That said, targeted harassment is against our CoC, and Lunduke is inflating this issue massively because that's what gets views. We have not put out an official statement on age verification because we don't have one to make yet. Relax.

@serebit

1/Well let me tell you he is not alone, I've seen videos from at least 4 other creators essentially with the same opinion. And about a half a dozen Linux threads. "Arch censors people who disagree with age verification is getting quite a traction out there. Whether this is true or not, is irrelevant, it's easy for people to arrive to a such conclusion.

Stating a plain fact that a guy named XYZ has twice inserted age verification PR into a linux project as the guy is clearly

@serebit
2/ admitting it under his own name is not a targeted harassment, that's overreaction. In addition, age verification posts are being deleted from official Arch forum. I'm being told it's because non technical topics are considered spam. Fair enough, But it really doesn't create good optics. My impression is there is 2 groups of people talking past each other - on one hand a hardcore arch nerds, on the other hand a wider arch user community with more political sensitivity.
@serebit
3/ And right now the second group is really dissatisfied. Maybe you don't care about losing them, maybe you don't care if things go to the way they were - Arch being a hard core distro for tech nerds instead of one of the mainstream ones, but this is certainly the direction it appears to be heading right now ...
@PeterSoukup Personally I'm not really bothered by folks deciding to swap distros over this. Manufactured outrage is common because it gets clicks and views. If it weren't age verification it would be something else. That's the beauty of Linux—we can choose what we want to use. If people are really upset by our CoC enforcement, they can take their vitriol to Hacker News or 4chan or whatever. I recently learned the term "hobbyless behavior" which I think applies here.
@PeterSoukup Also worth noting that the actual issue at hand—legally mandated age verification in open source software—is a very real issue and Linux distros will need to deal with it. We do not currently have a plan for how to deal with it, but we're actively exploring our obligations and we will make a public statement when we have the information necessary to do so. I encourage the Arch community to stop spreading FUD that only makes the situation worse for everyone involved.

@serebit Yes, they are dealing with it, some showing more bravery than others ...

Ageless Linux — Distro Compliance Tracker

@serebit @PeterSoukup but how are you going to deal with it if you can’t talk about it in the official forums? Honest question.
@pythonchess @PeterSoukup Community discussion about it in the official forums isn't going to influence our decision on the matter. It's up to legal analysis.
@PeterSoukup could use better source, landuke is always over-dramatizing
@mattesilver I've seen very similar videos from about 5 different youtube creators, in addition I've seen the same discussion in about half a dozen linux threads. I've picked this one totally at random. I'm sensing people don't like him very much here, I've only seen a couple of videos from him, I'm not even subscribed to his channel, but so far he seems OK to me ...
@PeterSoukup I watched a few his videos .He's a drama queen and makes everything about himself
@c401mh3 Try https://artixlinux.org/ It's arch but with a choice of init system
Artix Linux - Home

Artix Linux, a systemd-free linux distribution.

@c401mh3 But I wouldn’t make any changes yet. As of now, the issue is way overblown. It's currently an optional birthdate field, nothing more. It may come to nothing. Never hurts to look into options though to get ahead of things if and when there is a real problem.

Some people call it a "slippery slope" but I'm not so sure. Does the inclusion of the birthdate field make it harder to resist actual age/id verification in the future?

On the other hand, mass protests and outrage may send the message that users don't want this kind of thing. Moving away from #systemd and corporate RedHat (first distro I used back in 2000 or so!) influence may be a good idea given the way the world is going with increased corporate and government control of tech.

Personally I use #arch and have been looking at #artix to get a similar experience, but with a choice of init system. #openbsd is another option for going non-corporate. Thanks for reminding me to look into #gentoo as well 😃
