Ballot Babes — Patty Wiens - Bicycle Mayor of Winnipeg

Patty Wiens - Bicycle Mayor of Winnipeg

Episode 2 of Ballot Babes is up

"We’re dropping a somewhat urgent episode in light of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works meeting, taking place March 4, 9:30am at City Hall. We’re going to tell you all about what this committee does, who is on the committee, and why you should care about this upcoming meeting! If you can go in person, we highly recommend it; if you can write in comments or delegate at this meeting, we walk you through why engaging with these processes matter when it comes to influencing the fabric of our local democracy.

We’ll be particularly focusing on the scrapping of the temporary bike lane infrastructure hard fought for since 2024, and the motion for city-wide speed limit reduction."

i think this series is great for demystifying what happens at city council and making it more accessible to get involved. they're not on fedi which is why i'm making an effort to post it every week

Jeff Browaty: why do we pay for active transportation routes to be cleared in the winter? people should be driving or taking the bus in the winter and only riding their bikes in the summer

🤦

so it's pretty recent that i realized they livestream the local city council meetings thanks to Ballot Babes. They are meeting right now.

Winnipeg City Council Meeting - 2026 03 26

YouTube

did they just entirely skip the stuff about the wellington bike lane that all of the people went to the meeting for? and now they're in recess until 1:30...

times like this it's hard not being on twitter

ah okay i just wasn't paying attention
okay they talked about it before i tuned in, rewinding
i respect anyone who does an in person or zoom delegation because i am the kind of person who would immediately start crying
they called a corner by my house a "death trap" and i'm hooting and hollering like someone at a rock concert that just heard "hello (your town)"
rob jenner was a cyclist killed by a car on wellington crescent where people are showing up to try and have a bike lane put in
wish the meeting had live chat turned on so i could boo
did he just say people will not be able to "participate in the economy" if they make wellington 40kmph
boooooo

councilors constantly invoking these phantom drivers trying to get their kids to soccer practice

they are trying RIGHT NOW

if you listen on the wind you can hear them to this day, trying to get their kids to soccer practice

Wyatt says he tried driving 40kmph and he couldn't look at the road and it stressed out his poor truck
also something to do with cars being too quiet when they drive slower will cause it to be more dangerous (what about school zones where it's 30???)

also gotta mention this. Councillor Gilroy has turned her back while Wyatt was speaking for the whole meeting

goddd why is jeff browaty

my takeway is several councillors derail everything by being totally incomprehensible and arguing for multiple opposite things at the same time

and now it's recess

also having trouble understanding what they are voting on, like they will vote down an amendment, but vote for the main motion, or like vote for a motion to be the motion but not....

i'll have to find something about it later

the fact that i was on a nonprofit board for five years and am confused by this is telling for civic engagement
@ProcessParsnip it's incomprehensible
@forestine does their argument imply that cars must be driven as fast as possible, for safety
because I think we're headed in a very MarioKart direction here

@ProcessParsnip it seems that way

and also because of soccer practice and the economy

@forestine ...that is such counterfactual bullshit, flying in the face of everything we know about traffic safety.
@attoparsec yeah this is a grim meeting
@forestine Clearly, you shouldn't be allowed to drive anything but a Ferrari under 40 mph.
