What if Filtr was a subscription? It would still be something like 5 bucks, but every year. 42 cents per month 🫠

Maybe this is the right choice to make sure Wipr keeps existing. I work on it for hours every day, and that’s hard to justify without any recurring revenue.

What do you think tho?

@mipstian I think that's a reasonable price. By the way, thank you for the work that you do with Wipr.
@mipstian I would pay a subscription to Filtr just to keep Wipr existing, to be honest. Not sure if I’m an outlier or not.
@mipstian I think that is a super fair price! While subscriptions get a bad rap (for very legit reasons), subscription models do make things (more) sustainable for developers. Happy to support your work!
@mipstian I could get behind subscription because it has ongoing backend and blocklist updates. I have issues with subscriptions as a work around for the lack of upgrade pricing on the App Store and the general race to the bottom on pricing.
@mipstian from a consumer standpoint one time is always preferred but I know that’s not sustainable so I’m in favor for subscription. I think Filtr is a bit unique in that it’s a bit more of a niche feature set/may not be as desirable as base Wipr so maybe it lends itself better to a subscription?
@mipstian also that price point is VERY good imo but I feel like with consumers (that are not like the people on mastodon) the minute they see a subscription they’re out so I think that’s a bigger barrier than the price itself personally
@ashah that’s true. At this point tho I’d rather have a smaller number of dedicated supporters, and stay able to fix whatever issue they report in reasonable time, than go for huge numbers.
@mipstian happy to be one of those. I totally get how subscriptions are needed and am happy to pay to keep my favorite apps alive indefinitely. Fan of your work in general anyway. I’ve also purchased tatami, tipped in the tip jar, etc 🫡
@mipstian definitely a "yes" from me; supporting Wipr is worth it.
@mipstian I think Wipr and Filtr are both good candidates for subscriptions!
@mipstian in general, I don't like subscriptions, but it is a necessary evil - especially when developing on a moving target and updating daily. I would even go higher and say 10€ a year is more than fine

@mipstian I wouldn’t even blink at 5€/year; extremely fair.

I don’t know about non-devs, though; they might be much less open to the idea.

@mipstian I would pay and I think it might even work out economically for you... BUT:

1. You're gonna hear a LOT of griping and grousing from your current users

2. Your app/service needs better marketing and promotion ... it's easily the best ad-blocking solution out there, but also one of the less popular

@mipstian Absolutely. I would pay more than $5 a year for Filtr and Wipr. I would $10 a year minimum but I also think $20-25 is completely reasonable
@mipstian Consider a $10 or $20 subscription in addition to the minimum one with the only added perk of "helps support development" and maybe an alternate app icon?
@mipstian I would absolutely pay. One of my most valuable apps. Thanks for what you do
@mipstian That is very reasonable. Especially considering it’s a new feature that people didn’t originally pay for when they first got Wipr. For something that you continually work on, you should definitely be compensated over time. $5 per year is a no brainer. Even $10 per year isn’t asking a lot.
@mipstian I’d certainly pay a yearly fee for Wipr 2!

@mipstian —in my opinion, make it optional—like a "tip" or one of those "buy me a coffee" options.

Since I live paycheck to paycheck, if it does turn into a subscription, I'll move back to Ghostery.

@mipstian I think it’s completely reasonable. I’d pay yearly for Wipr alone.
@mipstian Rebrand Wipr + Filtr as an upgrade, creating the Wipr Pro subscription
@telred17 how’s that different tho?
@mipstian It’s not really, I just think it’s a better way to present the subscription as people are more familiar with Wipr
@telred17 I see what you’re getting at but it seems a bit confusing
@mipstian Ok, it was just a suggestion, focusing on the trusted product rather than the new addition. I’ll subscribe whatever you decide
@mipstian I'd be totally fine with that! (I already do the $10 annual tip subscription fwiw)
@mipstian I'd absolutely pay a subscription for Filtr. Just testing it the past week has convinced me of its value.
@mipstian I am unreasonably biased to giving you money. Wipr has no peer. 5-10 USD annually would be generous on your part IMO.

@mipstian I would pay that as a sub no drama. I’ve used wipr since it first launched and it’s on all my devices. Filtr adds great functionality and is a great fit.

The strength of wipr is in the fact it’s fire and forget. It does exactly what it says it’ll do without any fiddly bits. It’s a wonderful bit of software.

@mipstian Absolutely would sub for Filtr if it was just as background and set-it-and-forget-it as Wipr. :)
@macmanx it’s even more like that I think 😅
@mipstian 5 bucks a year + a tip jar for the users who want and can help you financially!
I like the tip jar because I can based on the situation of my income
@ben_rearden that’s why I added it! The problem is nobody knows it exists 😬
@mipstian yeah, you are absolutely right. One humble idea: why don't you "remember" the existence of the tip jar in the posts about Wipr updates?
might be an elegant way to highlight the tip jar :)
@ben_rearden idk if I’d call it elegant or “begging” 😅 but for sure I could highlight it more
@mipstian yeah, it's tricky :)
@mipstian make it a full buck per month :)
@mipstian I’d go for it :)
@mipstian I’d pay for it-you deserve it.
@mipstian You should make it a subscription.
