Sound of Falling/ In die Sonne schauen:

Beautiful dreamlike cinematography, with child and adult actresses so natural it feels like you're watching the past, rather than a movie.

Heavy subject matter about the sufferings of womankind. Oof.

Asks the viewer for patience, emotional endurance and confusion tolerance: it is told non-linearly across four generations, like random collective memories appearing in your mind.

@Akshay This was one of my favorite movies from last year. It's such a devastating, tactile expression of the linkages of these women throughout the decades, not directly linked yet not unrelated, either, like their familial ties. Its mix of haunting beauty and profound tragedy is breathtaking.

@auzzy

Yeah, it definitely left an impression. And literally breathtaking, in that I had to sit and breathe a bit after the final scene.

But it's so stereotypically European Art House[1] that I'm not sure how to recommend something like this[2] to most of my friends!

[1] contemplative, dark, no standard screenplay structure

[2] Or Resurrection, which I saw on your pinned post you also liked. Sirat is probably the year's most accessible weird movie, as it does have three-act structure.

@Akshay Yeah, that's always the difficulty. Some of my all time favorites I don't bother recommending until I know the person's taste well enough that they'll tolerate such movies. For example, my all time fave is Synecdoche, New York.
@auzzy Synecdoche New York is also my all time favorite. I could say it's the movie that made me fall in love with cinematography.
It's true tho, that it's not everyone's cup of tea. For me it's a masterpiece, and the only movie I can give 5/5 guilt free.
Have You enjoyed other Movies of Charlie Kaufman?
I also enjoyed works of Malik Terrence, I'm curious if those also resonated with You. I would recommend Tree of Life. Although Malik's movies are much more slow paced.
@voidinitiation Yup, Kaufman is one of my favorites. I'm Thinking of Endings Things is fantastic, as is Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and Being John Malkovich.
The only Terrence Malick I've seen is Tree of Life, which was wonderful. I need to make a point to catch up on his other work.
