I really want to like this work (and the other work I've seen in the same vein). The technique is undeniably masterful; the level of skill on display is clearly unimpeachable.

It's just too much work to look at it though. There is no real composition, just an incredible chaos of lines.

It's simply too busy. It isn't that it's too complex; it's that there is no form to the work overall; nothing to draw and keep the eye, no center(s) of interest. It's just a form of noise.
