Got around to watching 'The Monkey' last night, which I expected to be just mid, given the low ratings, but ended up hugely enjoying it! Apparently, Osgood Perkins approached the film as a personal exploration of using absurdity to dispel petty dark stuff, inspired by the stark ways he lost both parents. Not in a nihilistic way; more like banishing the heaviness through dark humour. I know this is a very specific angle that, understandably, might not appeal to everyone, but for me it clicked.

The movie is gory and unhinged, and the dry humour fits well into the story. Generally, horror-comedy is a pretty hard genre to nail, but Perkins managed to find an ideal balance here. It's pretty different in tone to 'Longlegs' and to Stephen King's original short story, but I think it justifiably got King's blessings regardless.
