What's that you say? I don't need another project?
You're not wrong. And also, that's not stopping me.

That bag was sealed with packaging tape, sitting on a random table at an estate sale, priced at $15. They accepted $10, which was probably still high for something I couldn't actually investigate very well. Here's the bag's contents.
* Sony PSP PSP-2001 and manual
* Sony PSP PSP-3001 and manual
* Official PSP power adapter, 1500mA
* Official PSP power adapter, 2000mA
* Spicy pillow official 1200mAh battery
"There's your problem, right there."
I'm now the proud owner of two MemoryStick PRO Duo cards that were still inside the handhelds. So, that's something.
I wasn't even sure you could boot a PSP without a battery before now, but definitely works.
Slightly surprised by the outcome. The bashed-in PSP-2001 boots fine and everything seems to work. The mostly-fine PSP-3001 has a cracked LCD and you can't tell if it's booting.
I didn't unwrap this tape job expecting much, but it wasn't the worst I've seen. Appears it was a nicked cable. They just wrapped each one separately and then wrapped the pair back together.
I'll fully cut it and splice it back together with some heat shrink just to avoid future tape residue.
@patridge I was confused by this too. I thought the batteries had some kind of boot code that the PSP used or something, but apparently only in service mode I guess?
The main catch is you can't use the USB port for real power, just slow charging (while not being used.)
