Embracing motherhood: A foster care success story

Volunteering for Boston CASA, which advocates for kids in foster care, changed everything.

The Boston Globe
for those who don’t know, adoption of children and adoption of pets tend to be described in identical language: “forever home,” “gotcha day,” “rehoming,” etc. it is taboo for #adoptees to act against our socially prescribed roles as a rescue objects, forever morally beholden to our saviors.
whenever an adopter speaks, however “humbly” and “gratefully,” about the benefits of adopting a child, they reinforce the message that the social value of adoption—which irrevocably severs a child from their family & rewrites their identity—lies in giving adults a pathway to self-fulfillment.
