That is a lantern sail, very common in the Med and Arab Sea, it is decent sail but you can't get as close to the wind as a Bermuda rig and not as good with the sail abath the beam as the square rig.

Um actually in a storm you want to run with the wind, worse thing is to take the waves abeam, that's how you get pooped
