finally posting this after a weeklong break lol. as mentioned before, kid me skimmed/skipped through a lot of Whisky Peak and Little Garden, so my recollections of them are very, very vague

ANYWAY

- love love lovvvvvve Miss Valentine. she’s one of the few agents from early Baroque Works that I can distinctly remember, aside from Miss All Sunday (Nico Robin) and maybe Miss Goldenweek? Jazzara Jaslyn really nailed her cackling and I enjoy the Twiggy-esque thing she’s got going on

- I don’t remember Mr. 5 especially well, but from the looks of the anime/manga, he looks like he stepped right out of them, similar to how Kuro, Zeff, and Mihawk did. floors me every time I see that

- same goes for Robin/Miss All Sunday! Lera Abova captures her beauty and chilling presence accurately. her accent really accentuates both! my only complaint is that she isn’t as olive/dark-complected as she was in the anime (and a lesser extent, the manga). Abova is Russian though, which matches the hypothetical real-life country that Oda listed for her once

- also really like how Robin’s Devil Fruit powers are portrayed. the arms she spawns are beautiful and elegant, but oh so deadly and vicious. I couldn’t stop rewatching her introductory scene just to watch how each one mirked all of those Marines

- haven’t had a chance to mention this at ALL, but I love how OPLA has the wanted poster overlay pirate character intros! it feels fittingly comic book-like, and kinda stands in for the “Oda box” that introduces new characters in the manga

- the pre-Loguetown scene on the Going Merry felt a little…idk…thrown together? but it was also super funny watching 1) Usopp and Sanji bicker over the pepper grinder, and 2) Usopp get exasperated over Sanji convincing Nami to treat herself to a shopping spree…while also complimenting Sanji’s looks the whole time. SanUso shippers, come get your juice

- Loguetown did feel authentically like a small-but-bustling port town. a lot of different people coming and going, the shopping districts…almost wish there was more time spent there just to look at everything

- Nami and Usopp shopping and talking together was really cute. I hope there’s more scenes of them being besties; their dynamic is probably my favorite out of all the Straw Hat relationships

- wasn’t sure how to feel about OPLA introducing Bartolomeo this early, but I completely forgot that he actually *was* at Loguetown that day. it was hilarious seeing him try to pick-pocket Nami and her turning around like “man, you fucking suck at this. listen, dumbass, *this* is how you do it”

- the Italian opera singer performing “My Sails Are Set” was a nice little treat that I wasn’t expecting

- OPLA Tashigi is really cute; she really does—shockingly—look almost exactly like the girl who played Kuina and I enjoyed seeing her demonstrate her sword autism around Zoro even though that friendliness is short-lived

#onepiece #onepieceliveaction #opla

- I wasn’t full sold on Callum Kerr as Smoker, as I was expecting him to look a little older, taller and more grizzled looking. maybe it’s the wig? nevertheless, his Devil Fruit powers looked eerie as hell, so maybe he’ll grow on me

- was really, really hoping the horny sexist nonsense where Captain Alvida loses her weight thanks to her new Devil Fruit powers would’ve been left out entirely. but…siiiiigh

- on one hand, Paulino didn’t shed that much weight; her face is still noticeably round and not much attention is drawn to it. on the other…I’m seriously hoping she did so on her own accord and not because she was asked. it wouldn’t make sense anyway b/c season 1 left out all of the jokes/jabs about her being fat and focused on her arrogance and violent temper. it should’ve stayed that way tbh

- low-key wish Jeff Ward was given more profanity to work with to Buggy’s lines aside from “shit,” like…he’s a clown! and a bitchy pathetic one! he can make all sorts of vulgarities work

- Buggy and Alvida’s dynamic was pretty funny and fitting from how little I saw of it. Buggy try-hard womanizing when he talks to/about her while she just rolls her eyes feels about right

- one of the few times I didn’t mind the blurry wide-angle shots was when we see Luffy’s POV as he’s drowsy and delirious from the seastone cuffs. also felt SO bad for him because Godoy makes him look like a sad-eyed puppy when he’s totally helpless like that 😭🥺

- the scene on the platform worked better than I expected it to! initially I wasn’t sure how to feel about having Luffy not only smile but laugh, but it makes sense for two
reasons: 1) both “to smile” and “to laugh” usually use the same word in Japanese, i.e. warau (笑う), and 2) Roger himself also smiles and laughs, probably to also drive home [REDACTED SPOILERY OP LORE HERE]

- on that note, I’m also kinda-sorta ambivalent about the red herring approach to how Roger and Luffy are connected. I could see the idea of leading a new audience on to think they’re father and son —only to reveal that they aren’t—being tantalizing to showrunners. but I’ll withhold judgment to see how it plays out

- Dragon’s performance felt a bit flat, but the way he zips in and stops Smoker and stares at him from under the hood were SO fucking spooky. same goes for how him and Smoker just disappear in a gust

- the brief cameo of [REDACTED CHARACTER] in the foreground felt weird, but given the spoiler nod during the Roger/Garp flashback it makes sense to add him there

- it was really cute how Bartolomeo’s first sign of his budding admiration for Luffy was imitating his wanted poster. Luffy-sempai gained a kouhai that day and doesn’t even know it

- Robin propositioning Tashigi to join Baroque Works was??? interesting. let’s see where that goes
