if my grandpa were still alive,
i think he’d be sad to see the disposable world we’ve become.
he was old school.
he saved parts in coffee tins.
he reused, fixed, and repurposed everything.
big companies design for failure now.
i understand the business model.
i just don’t agree with it.
it feels so awfully wasteful.
because of my grandpa,
i struggle to throw fixable things away.
i’m sitting on an airplane
with my bright red headphones
that have seen brighter days.
they’re held together with tape and glue.
way past their due date.
they still work.
they just look a little rough.
i can hear my grandpa whispering,
“we can fix this”
and the world shouting,
“throw them away”
when did fixing things become the wrong answer?
sorry grandpa.
i’m trying.
