Girls are often encouraged to be athletic, assertive or like “tomboys,” while boys face no socially acceptable equivalent in the other direction. There is no benign male version of tomboy. The closest is “sissy,” not typically considered a compliment.

@amydiehl when kiddo was little (bam), we were walking around our old neighborhood, and someone was having a garage sale, and they were selling a Barbie corvette. Kiddo wanted the corvette, who does not want a corvette? So I bought the corvette, and the woman didn’t want to sell it to me, because “you’re going to make him gay if you buy him this car.” And I said, that’s not how gay works, and I don’t care if he’s gay.” , and she said, my hand to god, “if my kid was gay I’d throw them out”, and her kids were standing right there. So I said, “well, they can live with me then, I got plenty of room.” And we drove off with the corvette.

Yeehawdists are weird, man. Weird.

@MissConstrue @amydiehl unrelated, but one of the most awesome things I have seen in my life - I was at the park, and this little, maybe 7 year old girl drove up in her barbie Corvette, and casually but perfectly parallel parked it alongside the playground - like, pulled past the "parking space", threw it in reverse with her arm on the top of the seat next to her, and backed it in while turning it into the exact spot she wanted, perfectly parallel to the 'curb' of the park, a wooden plank.
