#Ring #doorbell has been replaced by a local-only alternative for less than the cost of my annual Ring Subscription.

And #windows NTFS partitions have been mounted by #Bazzite allowing me to recover the dregs of the data I forgot when I buggered up the attempt at dual boot.

The #deshitification has been good this weekend!

@doug you got a guide you've followed for the alternative? Everyone around us is installing Ring BS and I'd like to sometime show off an alternative.

@emkingma I have to admit I went lazily with Tapo/TP-Link which supports a local SSD. A friend answered his doorbell while we were out recently and I was impressed at the superior image quality, AND the timeliness of the call. The device has "onboard AI" which is hype speak for ML pattern recognition. And it came with an indoor chime - a separate expense for Ring devices!

Ring has a terrible delay, which is frankly unacceptable esp. considering the cost.

@emkingma If I had more time and patience, I'd investigate some truly offline alternatives, but my family aren't as tolerant of geeky unpolished solutions, so for now I'm not paying a subscription at least.
@doug that still sounds really good. Even if it isn't from scratch.
