Every time a newcomer posts an introduction and somebody tells them they shouldn’t have joined Mastodon.social and need to move to a different server, an angel loses their wings.

Ditto:

'Why are you still on Bluesky too?'

'But did you *delete* your Twitter account?'

’You said you switched to Proton mail too, oh that’s bad, once someone at Proton said something’

It’s nice to see new neighbours move into the Fediverse. It feels unwelcoming to see people immediately interview them about the purity of their intentions. Or telling them You’re Doing It Wrong. They've just arrived on a journey away from Big Tech. Maybe they'd prefer to be offered a seat and a cup of tea.

The fact that the thread under this Serious Toot has ascended into a pleasant war about the correct way to pronounce Scone is why I love the Fediverse

@CiaraNi If you have time to debate how to pronounce Scone, I would argue you are not eating enough Scones.
@holsta Fair point. I have eaten no scones today. I should remedy this.
@CiaraNi
A minor point of disagreement!
You might have ask whether the cream or the jam should go on first and sparked a civil war in Britain.
@hitsuyonai I would never ask that question! Because I already know that the jam goes on first.
@CiaraNi
You have a lot of self confidence young lady!
@CiaraNi We all know the real question is whether it’s jam or cream first…
@SorenMRiis That's not a question because the jam goes on first, no question

@CiaraNi You seem rather opinionated on these matters...

Also, scone rhymes with gone because I dated a Scouser for 3 years, and it's cream first because it's a damned mess to spread clotted cream on top of jam. ;-)

@SorenMRiis By 'opinionated', you meant 'right', of course.
@CiaraNi If you ever resolve that war, you can refine it into the cream/jam first mayhem!
@Devonkiwi There is only mayhem if someone puts the cream first. And sure who would do a thing like that.
@CiaraNi Grrrrrrrr!

@Devonkiwi @CiaraNi I've lived both sides of the Tamar, eaten scones in both counties, and honestly they all taste exactly the same.

Pasties, now. They're a different story altogether.

@DavidBridger @Devonkiwi I was in Cornwall once and left without eating a pastie. I think that was probably illegal. I shall rectify that next time.
@DavidBridger @Devonkiwi Oh wait, it's pasty not pastie, isn't it, so now I've even insulted the spelling of it
@CiaraNi @DavidBridger As a Devonian, I must confess I prefer the side crimp.
@CiaraNi the correct way to pronounce scone, in any language, is yum!
@JamesNielsen Finally the right answer, one on which we can all agree!

@toothless

I love these kind of maps!

@CiaraNi

@scandigonian @toothless Me too, they're great fun

@toothless
I'd love to see a map like this of North America and some theories of why different areas pronounce it the way they do.

I definitely say it in a way that rhymes with 'cone' and have no idea why.

@CiaraNi

@wannabemystiker @toothless

'I definitely say it in a way that rhymes with 'cone' and have no idea why.'

Oh I can explain that. The reason you think Cone rhymes with Scone is because it does. Skon be gone.

@CiaraNi

"Oh I can explain that. The reason you think Cone rhymes with Scone is because it does. Skon be gone."

Haha! That explains it!

My Irish ancestors came from Clare (180 years ago) and my English ancestors came from the West Midlands (300 years ago) -- all in the "cone" zone but there's no way that speech pattern would hold that long -- or maybe it would. 🤔

@toothless

@wannabemystiker A Clare man at heart - a county that not only pronounces scone correctly but is very beautiful too. I like the idea of a 'cone scone zone'.

@psneeze

I saw that map further up this thread which made me consider why I say 'scone' the way I do. But, it could also be a "West Coast" (of the States) speech way (not to be confused Valley Girl Speak).

@toothless Nice map :-) And it seems to harmonise nicely with the geographical spread in this thread.
@CiaraNi born in Green, now residing in deepest darkest Orange 😬
@toothless My thoughts and prayers are with you
@toothless @CiaraNi "Scone rhymes with cone" vs. "scone rhymes with gone" is the sort of thing that native English speakers have no trouble with, but anyone learning English as a second language is going to think "yeah, I know this is a totally effed-up language; you don't need to rub it in so openly, you know."
@CiaraNi I’m not sure about the correct pronunciation, but I don’t really like scones. (Ducks & hides under the table…)
@Zero2beach This is as shocking to me as the time someone told me they don't like puppies
@CiaraNi And now I know how to pronounce Eoghan!
@jeridansky It's not the most phonetic of names, admittedly. But not the least phonetic of names either, by Irish standards.
@CiaraNi The pronounciation is a matter of geography. The more interesting question is: Do you put the clotted cream on first, or do you put it on top of the jam?
@jali That's not a question. Jam first. No question.
@CiaraNi The late Queen of England would have agreed with you. But since I'm not a royalist, I listen to science rather than authority: The Centre for Industrial Rheology conducted a study and came to the conclusion, that cream first is the better solution. https://www.rheologylab.com/scone-ology-jam-first-or-cream-first/
Scone-ology: Jam First or Cream First?

Do you put the jam on the cream or the cream on the jam? The perennial question. Let’s put this to the rheological test…

Rheology Lab
@jali I'm a life-long unwavering republican-with-a-small-r myself, but still: jam first.
@CiaraNi I am afraid this is more a question of theology, rather than rheology. And since there is no use in fighting over religion, I'd end with this: Enjoy your scones, whether with jam or cream first! What matters is: They're tasty.
@CiaraNi I recently went into a cafe and had a brief internal battle over whether I wanted to sound like a colonialist or a culchie. Regrettably my mouth decided not to commit either way and it asked for a skun.
@thearcanecomposer "whether I wanted to sound like a colonialist or a culchie" - I love this. Such a choice. And also no choice - culchie wins every time 🙂
