Quick vibe check on @elk usage.

πŸ‘‰ Have you been using #Elk web app (https://elk.zone)?

Please #boost for science :) We have been discussing the future of Elk and your input here matters a lot. πŸ™

Feel free to elaborate on the comments as well!

Elk

A nimble Mastodon web client

Elk

@ayo @elk never heard about it, and visiting the site does not tell me what it even is.

So: no idea what it even is

I assume it's a fedi client, but that's completely based on your post

@skaverat check @elk, it's rather more informative than the site.

(I had never heard of it either, and have no intention of switching from Tusky and (for the occasional quote-toot) the "Official" Mastodon-app.

@ayo

@ayo @elk Stopped using it when quote boosts come out on the official app but aren't here.
@Ekyllier @ayo @elk but they are?? Or is that just the canary branch on main.elk.zone?
@haayman @ayo @elk I'll have to test it again but the last time I used Elk, I couldn't quote-boost and I waited a while for that to arrive but never did for me.
@Ekyllier @haayman @ayo @elk I've tested it and there doesn't seem to be a quote feature yet. Moreover, Elk still doesn't display quoted posts within posts. Instead of a nested view, it's just RE: with a plain URL.
@katzentratschen @Ekyllier @ayo @elk it does? I've seen it. I'm on mobile at the moment, so I can't make screenshot. And there's a quote button.
Did you test it on main.elk.zone?=
@haayman @katzentratschen @ayo @elk So I've just jumped on my computer now to check and unless it's crazy hidden, I don't see it πŸ˜…
@Ekyllier @haayman @ayo @elk (And I cannot find a quote button either. 🧐)
@Ekyllier @haayman @ayo @elk For the record: I am using it on mobile, more specifically Safari on iOS 26.3.1 (a).
@Ekyllier @haayman @ayo @elk Woohoo. Switching to main.elk.zone did the trick.
@katzentratschen @haayman @ayo @elk Ahh, that did fix that issue. I am assuming this is a pre-release stream?
@Ekyllier @katzentratschen @ayo @elk the main program is indeed very much behind the canary build
@Ekyllier @katzentratschen @ayo @elk sometimes there's a bug on the canary branch, but usually they're quick to respond to bug messages. Haven't been able to fix anything myself unfortunately
@ayo @elk It's the way I interact with #Mastodon and I do this from multiple devices daily!
@ayo @elk I would like popular UI innovations in Elk to be folded into Mastodon proper (the web client should be default awesome) and would be happy to help fund this
@codinghorror @elk Thanks for the gesture of generosity Jeff! This already means a lot. There are a few big things that need to happen both on Mastodon & Elk side, I'm willing to start/participate on discussions. Great to connect with you!
@ayo @elk what's the discussion about? I really really like it better than any other web client. I've tried to use phanpy but couldn't get used to it
@ayo I’ve used it but I primary use my phone to browse mastodon. Which ive been lazy with using a browser. Any chance you’d do an dedicated IOS app I’d download in an instant !
@64bithero @ayo If you didn't know, you can install Elk as a web app. That's it's core USP for me: no need for an app, but it works just like one.
@theadhocracy @ayo I finally figured it out and it’s a game changer! Still tweaking my layout to perfection but this is the app I have been waiting for overall !

@ayo @elk it's still my main way to interact on web (or rather, my softfork crab is https://github.com/maybeanerd/crab )

But, I use mastodon on mobile 95% of the time. And there I use @moshidon

@ayo @elk I use exclusively Elk with the Astro account, but basic Mastodon web (or 3rd party Android apps) with my personal account.

I like the extra confidence of knowing when I'm logged into which account so I don't inadvertently post from Astro by mistake. πŸ˜‚

@sarah11918 @elk πŸ˜… You can use a different theme for each account by the way!
@sarah11918 @elk But our docs is not updated so… πŸ˜‚
@ayo @elk Just jumped into settings and found it! Now, would I remember which theme is which, though... πŸ˜…
@sarah11918 @elk Taking a lot of notes for improvement!
@ayo @elk Using app on iPad and iPhone, but #elk on Mac.
@ayo @elk Seems that it does not support emoji reactions, so I won't try it. Maybe in future releases?
@ayo i use it from time to time @elk
@ayo @elk Would love to keep using it, since it's visually superior to anything i've seen from other clients, but the glacial pace of development makes it increasingly hard to.
@ayo @elk Never heard of it, sorry
@ayo @elk use it on desktop. use the default client on mobile (elk is too sluggish and annoying on my phone)
@ayo @elk I use it everyday on my self-hosted version on Yunohost. Working great!
@ayo @elk tried elk but the package in the archlinux user repository simply, does not work if you wanna add an account to it
seemed maybe fit to what i would want from a client otherwise, though

@ayo @elk I used it a lot, I find the interface quite ergonomic but my biggest complain was the size of the emojis.

They are way to small for my myopia and the web client of my instance can zoom them.

So I stopped using it

@ayo @elk It was my main client for quite a while, and I still love it, but now I mainly use @phanpy.
@ayo @elk Just set up a self-hosted instance and I'm loving it so far! It'll probably be my primary client, at least on web (I'm happy with the official Mastodon app on mobile).
@ayo @elk I've used it daily on my laptop since early 2023 (I use something else for mobile access.) I've not found another web app / interface that works as well for me.
@ayo @elk
My first instance had a subdomain that served it as an alternate interface, and I tried it a couple of times, but I had some issues with some of it's design choices and how my browser handled PWAs... pretty much forgot about it entirely tbh, especially since switching instance...

@ayo @elk Ok I just figured out how to add the pwa. This is my go-to for now on!

So happy πŸ˜ƒ

@ayo @elk The reason why I have never felt any reason at all to use Elk: my Mastodon server already has a web interface, so what's the point of the extra layer of complexity?

Now -- I'm not saying there's no benefit; I'm sure there is. But addressing this concern would be central to a pitch for Elk, no? I've heard Elk promoted before but never have heard this concern addressed.

@ayo @elk Using main.elk.zone for Quote support. An absolute must at this point.
@ayo @elk I didn't hear about it until now, going to head over to it soon (to check it out)!
@ayo @elk I've been working on building my own Mastodon-compatible server and I've found Elk to be pretty handy for testing locally.

@ayo @elk I love Elk, it’s my main Mastodon client on desktop and iOS (installed on Home Screen as a PWA). I use it daily. It’s so much easier on the eyes, more readable, than the default client, any of the iOS apps I’ve tried, or Phanpy.

Edit to add: I don’t mean to throw shade at the other clients, I am thrilled there is a rich ecosystem of Mastodon clients for people to choose what works best for them.

@ayo @elk It depends. @ivory is well integrated into iOS so I find it easier for sharing posts to and from fedi. I can't read a timeline without Ivory's advanced filtering now. But Elk is better at rendering Markdown and other fancy formatting that might be available on non-Mastodon servers. The perfect fedi client doesn't exist for me (yet).
@claudinec @ayo @elk Markdown/html format viewing is coming in the next update!
@ayo @elk I love Elk thank you for making it 🀘πŸ₯°
@ayo @elk I was an elk only use but never went back after trying phanpy.
@ayo @elk I used to, but switched to Phanpy when quote boosts weren't supported for a while :/
@ayo @elk It's not clear why I would use Elk -- what features does it add over the standard web client?
