And our last question of the week:

Q8. It's weekly photo time, and almost the equinox. What did you see this week? Share a photo if you'd like. Cycling related or not is fine. Tell us about it!

#BikeNiteQ #BikeNite #BikeTooter #Cycling #MastoBikes cc @bikenite

@bikenite A8. I decided to take the long way home with my kid last night, and they were fine with that too. We were about 75 minutes from home by bike + transit, 75 minutes by just bike.

I was tired, but it was a nice night ride and we had a chance to just chat, rolling on empty streets, mostly separated from car traffic. Here’s a photo of when we cross the bridge into Alameda from Bay Farm Island.

We were treated to the twinkling lights of Oakland and then San Francisco in the distance and a little bit of stargazing.

A8.
Winter is _not_ letting go easy this year.
#BikeNite
@silvermoon82 @ascentale @bikenite dang and we're burning up here in NorCal!
@genex @silvermoon82 @ascentale @bikenite Human Climate Change driven heat dome over the west.
@ascentale @bikenite A8: this week has been a heatwave here in San Francisco and today I rode to my favorite pupusa spot and they had tables set up outside so I had to enjoy the al fresco dining! #BikeNite
@ascentale @bikenite this is a pile of burning grapevines, I saw today on a trip to Burgenland (wine region at the Austrian-Hungarian border). So this is what happens to them when they are old. I felt kind of sad, I love them and their irregular shapes.
@gudroot @ascentale @bikenite that's like a controlled burn thing? I don't know that I've seen that in wine country around here but I am not up there that often
@genex @ascentale @bikenite yes, controlled, there is nothing else around that could potentially catch flames. so, totally safe, but sad (have i said already that i love old grapevines?)

@gudroot @ascentale @bikenite

Interesting, didn't know they did this with vines.

It's a sad image, even though I assume it's all part of the life cycle of the vines. Hopefully they'll be new vines to make me happy again!

@ascentale @bikenite A8. In addition to the cherry blossoms being in full bloom all over my neighborhood, the trees they planted last year are flowering, too.

#bikeNite

@yantor3d @ascentale @bikenite I love magnolias. Had no idea they make good street trees.
@ascentale @bikenite thanks Phil, as always. Sorry, no photos today, must be time to go out for a ride and take a few
@ascentale @bikenite Posting from Anoka County, Minnesota. It snowed 6 inches Saturday/Sunday. Today it got to 62 degrees F in my back yard. Most of the snow is gone. Went for a spin to enjoy the warm weather and relatively snow-free streets & bike paths. #BikeNite a8 #Minnesnowta

@ascentale @bikenite

A8: Another rattlesnake. This one was along Parker Flats road at Ft Ord.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite #bikenite #biketooter A8 In NY for a bit and riding the citibikes around. I love the wild variety of NY bikes that I see on the streets. The citibikes are a little disconcerting to me because the grip shift on the citibikes turns the opposite direction than the grip shift on the Rock Hopper. So I consistently shift wrong.
@bikenite @RayKuntz @ascentale I love those bikeshare bikes in big cities! I’ve done D.C., Houston (R.I.P. Houston bikeshare), and Minneapolis (RIP again). Even though they’re tanks, they’re a great way to get around.
@ascentale @bikenite A8: Well, I did see the antenna I made and I did put it in the attic, does that count? ^_^
@moira @ascentale @bikenite Does GMRS get a lot of use in your area?
@gcvsa @ascentale @bikenite kinda does, yeah! particularly through the Queen Anne repeater, which is also where so many TV and ratio transmitters live. The coverage area is _very wide_, so the low actual density on the ground doesn't matter so much.

@ascentale @bikenite Posting from #CambridgeMA, specifically from the stage of the Peabody School, during tech rehearsal for our community opera, opening this weekend.

ObCycling: at some point this weekend, I'll find time to take the studded tires off my bike (my knees will be much happier).

@ascentale @bikenite A8. From the group ride I was on tonight - the group is the Music City Dope Pedalers. #BikeNite
@ascentale @bikenite
#BikeNite A8:
We had a blizzard here in #RochMN over the weekend. I was stuck out of town and did not get home until Tuesday as the roads were not safe to drive until then. I had a huge pile of snow in front of my house when I rode my fat bike that afternoon.
Then this evening's sunset gave us some interesting lighting as I rode home from a bike advocacy group meeting.
@ascentale @bikenite This week we were on the US Canada border along the #gunflinttrail. Heading out for a hike and we spotted two wolves as they came out of the woods and crossed a trail. Never saw them before in the wild. One of the coolest moments ever. #bikenite A8
@Brownian_motion @ascentale @bikenite Do wolves eat hikers? 🤪 (cool!)
@ai6yr @ascentale @bikenite Glad they weren’t hunting us. We spotted Moose tracks later in the day and wondered if they had been searching for bigger game. #MNastodon

@Brownian_motion @ascentale @bikenite

Wow! well spotted. And you surely would not have seen them from a car.

@ascentale @bikenite A8 #BikeNite a cargo bike for a surfboard.

@dr2chase

I was sure you had a Thighmaster attached to your bike!

@ascentale @bikenite

#BikeNite A8 #IWatchTooManyCommercials

@bobjonkman @ascentale @bikenite not my bike. I saw it, out in the wild, had to take a picture.

@dr2chase

"Not my bike, not my Thighmaster" has the same vibe as "Not my circus, not my monkeys" 🤣

(I thought "Circus/Monkeys" was a great phrase when I first heard it, and was kind of hoping for an opportunity to use it. But then I wouldn't want to be caught in a situation where it could be used. This will post will have to do.)

@ascentale @bikenite

#BikeNite A8 #OffTopicAgain

@bobjonkman @ascentale @bikenite isn't a bike sort of a thighmaster all on its own?
@ascentale @bikenite Riding around Half Moon Bay California, checked out the action in Pillar Point Harbor where apparently you can get live, fresh, gluten free, organic, free range crabs right off the boat. Beautiful day on the coastside today. #bikeNite #BikeNiteA8

@Kleen @ascentale @bikenite File under words have no meaning?

#BikeNite

@InkySchwartz @Kleen @ascentale @bikenite redundant words have meaning, they are just redundant.

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A8
We’ve been doing more rural rides than biking into town lately. But current weather’s heat wave + steep hills of our rural routes led us to opt for biking into town yesterday instead, so we could cool off on the coastal trail. We’ll be biking to this spot (Window on the Bay Park in city of Monterey) on March 28 for next local No Kings Day.

@ascentale @bikenite A8. This week I built up an old frame to go on the turbo. So I could liberate my summer bike for outside use.

I can't help myself, I've made it too nice and now I want the new turbo bike for outside too ;-)

@markn @ascentale @bikenite

Dynamo on a turbo trainer!

Looks lovely and lean. Minimal wrap on the bars and keep it looking clean

@MatthewNewell @ascentale @bikenite I knew someone would notice that!

It's my crunchy bearing 60k km+ in all weathers one.

I believe SON service them. But, I'd have to take the hub out of the wheel and pay the post to Germany etc. And I didn't/haven't so far.

I quite like the combo as it makes me nostalgic. This bike & hub did most of my first long rides with me. (Audax SR, London to Paris, Dragon ride, etc). I can't face getting rid of it for peanuts.

@markn @ascentale @bikenite

Got two of them for my disc brake bike; one is in 650b and other in 700c - not sure I would know what to do without a dynamo on a daily basis.

Re Repairs - I think authorised dealers will do that for you, for a PRICE!

I am probably at same sort of mileage, maybe a shade more on thin/road and less on fat/gravel , but not crunchy or even noisy yet - guess I have been lucky.

Amazing riding in Germany. Do a bike trek and drop it off. Save one set of postage.

@MatthewNewell @ascentale @bikenite I love a trip with a dubious justification. Now I'm semi retired I stand much more of "accidently" finding myself on a ferry from Newhaven later this year.

@markn @ascentale @bikenite

I once had to explain that to the staff of a farm shop when they found out I was on a 100mile roundtrip to buy their beans.

I fail to understand how some people think this is a problem

@markn @ascentale @bikenite Nice. An Equilbrium? I've the 853 Fugio 'cross bike they did for 2014(?) and used to have it all matchy matchy based on Reynolds' colours.

@pete @ascentale @bikenite very good spot especially from that angle.

Yup it's the first revision of the disk Equilibrium. Loved the grey & orange paint. Although paint thickness could be better!

Genesis make great bikes. But, with the steel forks the Equilibrium is definitely more long distance or commuter tank than cafe racer.

In my quest for wider tyres I often wondered if I should have gone fugio.

@markn @ascentale @bikenite Re the paint, I had mine resprayed as it got real bad around BB and downtube, and had some additional bosses added too.
@pete @ascentale @bikenite nice! I like a bike that persists.

@ascentale @bikenite

A8. My nice sunset photo on Thursday didn't save, so here's a progress report on servicing my drive train last weekend. (I did manage to finish)

@ascentale @bikenite A8 #bikeNite. Here you go, you can have a #ShadowSelfie this week.

@ascentale @bikenite

A8. Treat of the week was finding a tawny owl feather on my walk on Friday (pic already shared) because it confirmed an identification by my BirdNET-Pi that I had been a bit dubious about.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A8. We had a sunny day last week and I had to go out to enjoy the arrival of spring.
I share a picture of a town I visited last week (Limburg an der Lahn). Enjoy the half-timbered houses! The old town is full of narrow medieval streets lined with half-timbered houses that are hundreds of years old.
(Btw. I took the train. You cannot cycle through such narrow streets anyway.)
