HEY LAZYFED!

Who sucks least these days at multi-node wifi?

(Be aware that the answer is NOT, repeat NOT ASUS, due to their "eh, dgaf, diaf" reaction to botnet-enabling security flaws.)

Thanks!

@moira I put in a tp-link Deco 3-node system a few months ago and it seems to work pretty well.
@moira I went eero pro 7… after years of fighting Synology’s bullshit. I manage a corporate stack, why the fuck am I managing yet another one?
@moira When I have the time (ha!), I may try putting OpenWRT on my old mesh WiFi devices, now that the manufacturer is no longer providing security updates.
@moira I could not get my 2 Asii to connect and would not recommend anyway.
@koushiniku Disrecommendations are very helpful too, thank you!

@moira I’m no expert, but have been happy running Eero for over a decade now. Pretty much has been set it and forget it.

Only downside I’ve run into is that the mesh system (and this may be typical for mesh systems, I dunno) doesn’t let you designate separate 5 and 2.4 (or whatever it is) networks. Which was never an issue until we got our new hybrid car that has CarPlay, but complains because it can’t scan for CarPlay if connected to a 5 GHz network, and tells you to put it on a 2.4 GHz network. My solution was to prioritize CarPlay and tell it to forget our home network. If you don’t have CarPlay, or don’t connect your car to your home network, this may not be an issue.

@moira well, I don't recommend the linksys velop.

@moira

I have 5 multi-node installs (3 homes, 1 ranch, 1 fairground-sized music festival setup)
Ubiquiti is good for P2P/P2MP between buildings, + private non-cloud cameras for helping watch over elders prone to falling
Ubiquiti AP multi-node mesh on-property doesn't suck if you also need remote management
AMZN Eero AP mesh behind P2P or router are great for normal setups
Aruba doesn't suck if you have the $$$ & staff. No for me 😬
Family had no joy w/ ASUS; bad hardware many times 😕

@tab2space I've been wanting to play with Ubiquiti for a while, next time we properly re-architect i'm seriously going to look into it

(right now we have no PoE and yeah we could do it... probably... but not without... annoyance and delay. particularly delay, which is bad in the context.)

(next time tho')

@moira I don’t really have any other solid points of comparison but I’ve gradually switched to Ubiquity unifi stuff and I’m pretty happy with it.
