When did mathematicians start pronouncing the union symbol as "cup" during talks? I feel like this conference is the first time I've heard that, but it's happened multiple times.

I especially want to know: which came first, the pronunciation or the \cup (La)TeX command?

@CGTKyle https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cup_product the construction dates well before Knuth (mid to late 1930s), not sure about the history of the name though. But I have a paper book to hand from 1960 using a version of \cup as the symbol and the name "cup product", which is also pre-TeX
