Folks, please be nice to BlueSky.

You don't want to be labelled as a critic, and kindly remember they are really decentralized and only took $100+ million in venture capital to improve the social web.

Last but not least, don't pay attention to the CEO responding to criticism by responding with "Are you paying us? Where?" followed up with "You could try a posters strike. I hear that works".

They are great. ATProto is the future. They aren't like other girls.

They care ❤️

@dansup you almost got me in the first para.

also, ah, jay graber, who went looking for a trust & safety person only after very strong user backlash, and after people noticed that half of the bsky development team, including graber, followed a white supremacist account who made death threats against a black woman.

@dansup If I didn't know better, I'd almost think you were being sarcastic here. Imagine.

Bluesky Reveals Massive Hidden Investment Today #Bluesky revealed that in April 2025 they received a whopping $100M venture capital investment lead by Bain Capital Crypto and that they KEPT IT A SECRET. https://bsky.social/about/blog/03-19-2026-series-b So the answer to the big mystery Who Owns Bluesky? (https://mastodon.online/@mastodonmigration/116025246450023071) is finally out. Crypto VCs. Now, we should be asking why did this company that prides itself on transparency and "decentralization" decide they needed to hide who owned the company?

@kboyd I knew something didn't smell right about decentralization on the AT Protocol when the creators of it implemented digital ID into it.
@kboyd I think @dansup was being sarcastic
@oblomov @dansup Oh i know he was. It was either this or anchorman's "I don't believe you" ... :)
@dansup
They have central control and decentralised (really they mean distributed) processing. It's not federated separate servers.

@dansup bluesky is any-time-now decentralized. it's decentralized *in potentia* but the cost to build another server is prohibitive.

you can, if you spend a lot.

@nonlinear If it were an appliance it’d be labeled “Decentralized Ready”
@btaroli Total. It’s like those recyclable bottles, you CAN recycle, if you put the effort, as a consumer. We won’t. Ok.

@dansup If that's the case, then why did they implement digital ID into their main centralized instance?

I hypothesize that it's a conflict of interest, no?

@dansup deleted my account their months ago.
@dansup poster strike. Oh you mean like leaving? Yeah actually I’ve heard that does work. LOL
@dansup hey you have a screenshot summarizing the day i deleted my bluesky account because fuck any company who acts like that
@dansup
Then there was the infamous day when she responded to a user concerned with the rising transphobia on the site with "I like pancakes"
@dansup Who owns Bluesky? 🗣️🗣️🗣️
@dansup Why it's almost as if people handpicked by Jack Dorsey from the Crypto world are largely untrustworthy and will happily sell out the user base they clearly despise to the worst humans as long as they get to fill their pockets before skipping away to the next scammy venture!

@dansup Not to mention they also recently did this thing where downloading images will EXCLUSIVELY prompt you to download them as WebP files, much like Fandom, Reddit, Discord, etc.

Maybe they do care after all.
