Weiss and Cibrowski announce they’re shutting down CBS News Radio, which has ~700 affiliated stations, on May 22. "Unfortunately, this decision means that all positions within the CBS News Radio team are being eliminated.”

Thus, the CBS Radio Network (b. 1927) will be terminated at the age of 99.

CBS Radio was the foundation of American broadcast journalism. Over five decades I filed hundreds of news reports for it and felt immense pride to have been on the same network as Murrow, Sevareid, Smith, Collingwood, Cronkite, Edwards, Trout, Townsend, Kuralt, Rather, Stahl, Knoller & Portnoy.

CBS News Radio to shut down after nearly a century of broadcasting

CBS News announced Friday that CBS News Radio will be shutting down this spring after nearly 100 years of broadcasting, citing "challenging economic realities."

@newsguyusa CBS News President Tom Cibrowski and Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss are fucking monsters.
@newsguyusa
You mean the murder of CBS Radio. It's not as though it simply keeled over on its own.
@newsguyusa
Mark Knoller didn't have to see it, at least. Bless his soul.
@newsguyusa They only know how to destroy
@newsguyusa The only reason people are upset is that they know what's going on! Brought to you by "if we stop testing, cases will go down".

@newsguyusa

didn't Portnoy have a complaint?

But yes the station of Murrow and Cronkite is a huge loss, hopefully the archives get saved.

@newsguyusa The leap from global, viscerally physical media, to ethereal, too-soft localization with cellphones, was too much, too fast. It's a critical behavioral error, leading to increasingly destabilizing root infrastructure metrics. Combine effects like Milankovitch Cycles being on full-tilt, and it's a recipe for disaster.
@numodular @newsguyusa What the dicks does orbital mechanics have to do with media monopolies?
@newsguyusa
This is the slamming of the door on 1A
Those appeasers at CBS are killing free speech willingly.

@newsguyusa Are the licenses being transferred to Audacy.

Are there any FM stations in the mix or are they all AM?

AM radio - home of white nationalist talk radio.

@karlauerbach
The stations were sold off a couple years ago. CBS News Radio was basically just a network.
They at least used to also have a sports radio network that was carried on one station at the cluster I used to work at. I think that's been gone a hot minute
@newsguyusa
@newsguyusa Walter Cronkite,Lowell Thomas Charles Osgood,and Edward R. Murrow turn in their graves.

@newsguyusa I'm 72. As kid I spent a fair amt of time at my grandparents' house. About the only time the TV got turned on was for Lawrence Welk, Ed Sullivan & The Wonderful World of Disney. A radio was on somewhere almost all the time, whether in the background or as a primary form of news/entertainment.

My grandparents' generation is gone, but that they formed *my* parents & they, in turn, formed my generation.

Ending radio programs pushes the masses to places like Fox & other propaganda.

@PattyHanson @newsguyusa

I'm not that far off from your age. I grew up with radio too, and loved it. But I remember that even back then there were right wing ranters, particularly on AM. But those same radio stations also had wonderful stuff like the CBS radio mystery theater, Bob and Ray, and Jean Shepherd.

We've lost a lot of good things to time. Not just radio, but so many wonderful books, shows, and movies that anyone under 30 or so will never see or even be vaguely aware of. That's why I try to recommend old books to young readers, particularly books that are in the public domain.

Someone has to try to save those memories! And I guess it's me.

@newsguyusa I wonder if the corporation is doing this more to save money OR to act like censorship OR because the corporation sees radio news as declining market?
@newsguyusa
That's sad news. Can Weiss-TV be far behind?
@TJC_2 @newsguyusa Already happening. The Bari Weiss ass-kissing with Erika Kirk infomercial was the start.
@newsguyusa 1987 was the year of the event that lead up to this.
@newsguyusa Trump can't pretend he invented it, so it's gotta go.
@newsguyusa They are hell bent on destroying CBS as a legitimate news organization and turning it into a MAGA mouthpiece.

@newsguyusa

Is that a Paramount decision?

@newsguyusa Appreciate your sharing the news, which to me is very sad. As others have mentioned, I grew up with radio and the loss of CBS News Radio is awful, especially IMO because we need it more than ever

@newsguyusa Today broadcasters want to know who is in the room, who farted and why did they choose that moment to fart, who laughed, who complained, what was on the screen at the time, and how that scenario can be repeated..

That can't be done with AM, FM, or OTA broadcast TV...without a streaming service.

@newsguyusa @bjb It almost makes one think that they’re trying to limit the sources people can turn to for news. I think I might indulge in some listening to CBS Radio Mystery Theater this weekend. End of an era.

@newsguyusa

It's too bad. I listen to their broadcasts on 103 here in NOVA.
