Cottoned on (very late in life) to tinned sardines. Gorgeous packaging, long shelf life, a tasty posh meal in a can for just a couple pounds. Also, frying eggs in the fishy olive oil to go with them 👌
@jonhicks Asda has these recently, when they first turned up last month or so I scanned the price because there was no price on them, they were £3 each! Fuck that.
Then a couple of weeks ago they appeared again and I scanned the price and they were 75p but I didn't get any as I was only cycled into there for one thing, I intended to get them later in the day, so when I cycled back, the shelf was bare of them!
Last week they had plentiful of them in, and an actual price on the shelf (75p) so I bought a couple, and we've tried one, and they're rather nice. Quite robust and chunky (basically pilchards, it's the same species, and Glenryck pilchards had disappeared off the shelves of all supermarkets a year ago).
@jonhicks grab some canned anchovies in oil while you are there, cheap (Aldi amazing value in UK-65p) and great flavour as the base for many sauces, just dump the fish and oil in let it melt and then add your other ingredients, great umami flavour ...
@jonhicks Highly recommend Nixe Mackerel Fillets in Spicy Tomato Sauce — spicy as in extra flavour, not heat (so I can enjoy it). One of the best snack-sized tinned fish I've ever had. We get 'em from Lidl.
@jonhicks you’re doing this over a sterno fire can at the edge of an abandoned wharf, correct? Fingerless gloves are perfect for this. I love fish in a can that are sauced with spice or mustard.
