Milton is a funny little place south of Dunedin. A rural service centre which is also home to the infamous Milton Hilton corrections facility.

For as long as I can remember, visitors were welcomed by large signs at either end of the town which read:

"Milton -- 'The Town of Opportunities'"

We always had a laugh as we passed those signs. "Milton!"

The Clutha District Council is refreshing town signs and while Milton now has a tasteful river scene with some elongated slender man standing on a shallow punt facing sideways across a river, it's apparently no longer a town of opportunities.

They dropped the strapline.

Will Milton ever recover?

@BobLefridge Milton: Half a chain to the left of where it should have been.

"Milton: bent by design"

@Daveosaurus

@BobLefridge at least Milton gets its own sign. Herbert has had to share a sign with Waianakarua since big town signs on highways became A Thing.

While Herbert is a small town, Waianakarua is more of an area to me. I had to have a peek at street view. Poor Herbert.

Was thinking while reading that:
"Milton is an interesting small town. They recently dropped their subtitle. As a result, they are no longer 'Hamilton with any Ham'" 🤣🤣🤣
@BobLefridge , they could drum up business by making the bike path from Waihola to Lorenz and beyond through their town clearer with pointers to the good bits.
Or maybe it's their intention for people to get 'Lost in Milton'.
