the cnc is making progress!

The spindles have recieved their bearings (3200 TN, they will have to be good enough...)

Next the bearing housings to mount them to the frame as well as the Z-Carriage will need to get printed. Maybe tomorrow.

And then the scary part begins.... electronics!

@la I can really recommending ESTLcam, but if you go LinuxCNC I'm also very interested in how that will work out for you.

@MisterMaker If I wanted to do this properly I'd definitely go with linuxCNC. The CNC in the Hackspace runs it, and I love it.

But for this? I'm just gonna do grbl or maybe fluidnc. Just an embedded thingy with a UI on an "actual computer"

Maybe at some point I'll switch it over, but for the time being this is gonna be a resonably crappy machine.

@la @MisterMaker
I do have a leftover Hub75 card that can also be utilized for #linuxcnc instead of the MESA card. You can have if it you like.

It also features the nice flex-PCBs from @marble, so card has inputs.

Not sure how much pain the software is though. Have never tried it myself.

Welcome to LiteX-CNC — Litex-CNC latest documentation

@cccpresser @MisterMaker @marble I'll have a looksie.

The frame is 2020 alu extrusions, and two of the three axies are linear rods instead of proper linear rails. It doesn't feel like this machine deserves a good controller. Then again, the whole motivation of rebuilding the machine was to get it closer in performance to the spindle I ALSO GOT FROM YOU.

I can't have the two actually nice components on the machine be the two components you've given me... that feels a bit silly....

@la @cccpresser @marble AS someone who used Marlin as a CNC controller with a 3DPrinter board, I can say having a good board that does not suck is kinda necessary. Marlin sucked so hard, although it worked fine everything worked like it should. But it just isn't suitable for a CNC machines. In retrospect I should have never done that.
@MisterMaker @cccpresser @marble A decent board for sure, but also definitely not Marlin...
@la @cccpresser @marble Hahaha yeah, I used it because I knew how to work with it but I was young and stupid :P
