Last week, I started the process of getting environment statistics recorded for #GUADEC2025. For the past few years the sysadmins have kindly recorded server usage data (for streaming, remote participation, etc.) and the organisers have kindly included travel questions in the post-conference questionnaire.

This data has been valuable to quantify the #GNOME project’s environmental footprint, and comparing it between years (and different models of conference organisation).

Last weekend, I helped a friend replace the fixed anchors in a local cave, as they were loose. We could have just put new anchors next to the old ones, and saved a lot of time, but instead we drilled out the old ones and re-used the holes to resin in the new ones. This avoided damaging the surrounding rock further than it already is.

#EnvironmentThisWeek #caving

This week I took some old laptops and tablets off some friends, in order to wipe and reuse/recycle/strip them for components, to get more life out of them. I haven’t assessed what state they’re in yet, but hopefully a few of them can have a second life in someone else’s hands.

#EnvironmentThisWeek #reuse

This week I replaced the tap nozzles in a building I help maintain with Neoperl low-flow aerator ones. Same efficacy for washing your hands, but about half the water usage.

(Also, several days early in posting this! Might make up for some of the times I’ve been late.)

#EnvironmentThisWeek #WaterUsage

This week I repaired a kitchen cooker extractor hood where the motor had died. One new motor needed, but most of the hood could stay in place.

#EnvironmentThisWeek #repair

This week (ha, I’m early again!) I spent a few hours removing Himalayan balsam from a local area before it sets seed and smothers out more other plants.

Had a few nice chats with people who went past and asked what I was doing.

#EnvironmentThisWeek #HimalayanBalsam #InvasivePlants

This week just gone I did more balsam removal. That might be all I do for the next week or two, trying to get as much as possible before it sets seed.

#EnvironmentThisWeek #HimalayanBalsam #InvasivePlants

This week just gone I litterpicked two old foil helium balloons from a moorland, at 500masl. They float away from whatever party/funeral they’re at, slowly lose buoyancy, and come to rest on a moorland fence ready to spread plastic everywhere.

#EnvironmentThisWeek #litter #moorland

This week I repaired a second-hand belt sander; all it needed was a couple of replacement bearings, which were very standard. Avoided this going to landfill.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week I repotted about 50 oak saplings I’ve been growing, as they’ve now outgrown their tiny pots and are off to big plant pot land.

Hopefully maybe half of them will be ready to plant out in the big scary world this autumn. We’ll have to see.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week (well, last week) I took the bus to go camping for the weekend, even though taking the car would have been easier. Got to read a book on the bus and generally have a much more relaxed time.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week (ahead of schedule!) I fixed the dodgy right-click button in my mouse with a new microswitch, rather than getting a new mouse.

#EnvironmentThisWeek #repair

This week I provided feedback (OK, complaints) about news coverage given to different political parties in one article, and about how to cool a house down in another article.

If you’re going to write an article about drilling for oil, maybe don’t put the quote from the Green party right at the bottom.

If you’re going to cool a house, there are much less energy intensive ways to do it than air conditioning.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

Last week I fixed a dodgy connection in some small consumer electronics (a night light) which meant it would otherwise have been thrown away.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

Last week I spent a few hours planning for increased water storage capacity (both potable and grey) for a remote building which has suffered from drought on its spring fed water supply in recent years.

#EnvironmentThisWeek #ClimateChange

Last week I had a friend stay over so we could go to a fell race together, allowing him to get there by public transport. It helped as the parking field for the race was small and quite slippery. I still could have done better at lift sharing though (two spare spaces in the car).

#EnvironmentThisWeek #FellRunning

This week I persuaded some friends to borrow or hire a decent quality tool rather than buy a cheap one for one week of work (and it inevitably get binned afterwards).

#EnvironmentThisWeek #tools

This week I did all my baking for the week during a 2h period of super-low-carbon electricity in the UK’s grid (due to windy weather). Low embodied carbon cakes, and also free electricity 🥳

#EnvironmentThisWeek

I’m quite behind on this. On the week of 2025-10-06, I was doing building work all week, so didn’t do much for the environment. We did experiment with lime plaster, though, which is a common heritage building material, so tangentially environment-related. It took ages to dry.

#EnvironmentThisWeek #LimePlaster

On the week of 2025-10-13 I sorted out the rubbish from a large party, ending up with 99% recycling, and (literally) a handful of stuff to go to landfill.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week I’m going to Northern Ireland, but taking the short ferry (from Cairnryan) rather than the long one (means lower carbon emissions from ferrying), getting to the ferry by train, and taking my bike for getting around when I’m there.

I think that’s pretty much the lowest carbon way to get to NI, and it should be good exercise

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week is basically the same as last week: I’m travelling around (sort of on holiday) by bus and foot. Decided not to bring my bike in the end; too rainy to be fun for the time I have.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week I chose to have a parcel delivered to a local shop for collection, rather than my door. Reduces the miles for the delivery vans, and forces me to go out for a nice 15min walk to pick it up. Win win.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

Last week I car shared to two fell races, and combined one of those trips with a visit to several shops and the recycling centre to reduce my traffic miles. Small things.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week I planned out tree planting for this planting season, and got hold of some tree whips in preparation. Not very much, but some progress.

Despaired at COP for a bit.

Donated some money to Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust for tree planting, as they have a double donation week. https://donate.biggive.org/campaign/a05WS000008zzWbYAI

#EnvironmentThisWeek

Let it Grow – Big Give

Double your donation for woodlands during #NationalTreeWeek and make twice the impact on the environment this Christmas! We need your help to create and care for our wonderful woodlands in the Yorkshire Dales. Give a lasting gift to nature and let it grow for generations.…

This week was similarly unproductive, mostly due to having a cold. Moved some 2-year old saplings out to a sheltered spot near where they’ll get planted so they have some time to adapt to the weather there, but that was it.

#EnvironmentThisWeek #TreePlanting

This week I planted out the 200 tree whips on a blissfully nice morning. Good to get outside after having a cold.

#EnvironmentThisWeek #TreePlanting

This week I arranged several in-person meetings to all happen in the same place on the same day, saving about 60 miles of travel.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week infracost.io released an implementation of a feature I requested to show carbon emissions from your cloud service usage. 🥳

https://www.infracost.io/blog/shifting-carbon-impact-left/

While I’m no longer in a position to make use of this, hopefully others are! I’m going to claim this for my #EnvironmentThisWeek even if I did make the initial feature request a few years ago 😅 — making feature suggestions for the environment does work.

InfraCarbon: Carbon Impact Visibility in Pull Requests

InfraCarbon shows the carbon impact of infrastructure changes directly in pull requests, alongside cost data, using trusted emissions data from Greenpixie.

This week I fixed holes and rips in several items of clothing. Maybe took an hour in total but has hopefully added a few more years to them.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week I did the same: fixed some rips in some running shoes using a speedy-stitch awl. Satisfyingly chonky thread.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week I fixed some holes in some socks, repatriated some lost property from a caving weekend, and sorted out 5kg of mixed rubbish and recycling from it too.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week I arranged installing a smart meter, which should show half hourly electricity consumption and hence help people reduce it. Arranging the installation was relatively straightforward

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week I car shared to a fell race again. Not an exciting #EnvironmentThisWeek but still fewer cars on the road and less energy spent on moving them.

And we had a good natter on the way.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week I checked on some of the tree whips I planted earlier this season. Some of them had grown leaves briefly! Encouraging.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week I did bought two second hand kettles for a place I help maintain, to replace broken ones, rather than getting new ones.

The broken ones couldn’t be fixed (kettles are definitely not built to be repaired), but there are thankfully plenty of second hand ones in great condition.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

Last week (quite late with this one) I wrote to the FCC about proposed light pollution satellites: https://mastodon.social/@pwithnall/116065919158849340

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week I finished upgrading the windows on my house to be triple glazed, for better insulation (and airtightness). I had quite a bit of help from friends. Worth it.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week (last week) I sorted out a bootful of building work waste from the previous week, for recycling. None of it went to landfill in the end, and maybe 5% of it had to go to waste-for-energy.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week I did more car sharing to various events, and advised some friends on insulation/airtightness improvements to their house.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This (last) week I made some enquiries with my council about dark skies in planning policy.

#EnvironmentThisWeek

This week I did some more car sharing and blocked up some draughts in a building I help maintain, to reduce its heating bills.
