Oh no, remote #GeoParquet is much less fun in #QGIS than I thought. These few polygons took ~50 Megabytes to fetch. I guess it is not enough to just use #GDAL defaults.

Neither of these layer creation options helped:
ROW_GROUP_SIZE=1000
SORT_BY_BBOX=YES
WRITE_COVERING_BBOX=YES

@walkermatt From what I gathered GeoParquet is just not ideal for small scale interactive map browsing if data transfer is considered. And that's totally ok! :)
