To make a seed snail:

1. Cut footlong lengths of supportive plastic sheeting - I like to use bubble wrap - approx 4-5" wide

2. Pack a half-inch layer of seed starting mix along the length of the plastic. Imagine that you're preparing a sushi roll or a jelly log. Firm the soil along the 2 long ends of the plastic - these will be the top and bottom of your seed snail.

3. Gently roll up from one end to the other, securing the final roll with tape.

4. Stand your seed snail on end in a tray or dish, held into place by other uprighted seed snails.

5. Gently place seeds atop the seed snail, starting at the center and spiraling outward. Top the seeds with ¼" seed starting soil.

6. Mist with water as often as needed to prevent soil from drying out. Place in indirect or mottled sunlight, covered as needed for your climate. Generally, the warmer or colder it is, the more coverings are needed.

7. When seedlings are ready for transplant, unroll the seed snail & gently disentangle each plant before planting it in its new home.

8. Wash the used plastic & hang it out to dry for a few days before folding & putting away for the next time.

Tips:

Leave one end of the plastic with a couple of inches uncovered by soil. Use this as the "end" of your snail & that flap of plastic should be enough to tape your snail shut.

Moisten potting mix before use.

Enjoy! 🩷
