#OTD in 1968 Hugh Thompson and two helicopter crew members placed themselves between American troops and the villagers they were murdering at My Lai in #Vietnam. Thirty years later the three men visited Vietnam and a few of the (now) women they saved. One woman asked why the other men (those doing the killing) didn't come along ... so they could forgive them.

It should be pointed out the ground troops viewed helicopter pilots as gods that saved them being overrun, resupplied them, provided overhead view, and risked their lives to evacuate them. So when Thompson landed between U.S. troops and villagers and had his crew point heir weapons at the ground troops, there was no possibility the ground troops would fight them. The other pilots wd not be as responsive in subsequent missions.
