A dichiararlo è l’ex presidente del Consiglio Mario Monti che, in un’intervista al Corriere della Sera prende posizione sul referendum sulla giustizia. Per il senatore a vita la sua decisione di votare contro la riforma non è “per punire il governo, di cui ho più volte sottolineato certi meriti”, sottolinea, e neppure “per favorire le opposizioni”, “ma ‘soltanto’ – spiega – per una ragione che a me sembra molto più fondamentale: che l’Italia continui a stare dalla parte dello Stato di diritto, nella vita del Paese e nel sistema internazionale”.
Per Monti “l’unico effetto indiscutibile della riforma sarebbe di spostare l’equilibrio dei poteri tra l’esecutivo e il giudiziario, a favore del primo”. L’ex premier dichiara di essere “molto” preoccupato: “Può sembrare un limitato smottamento, al confine tra due terreni. Ma, come sappiamo bene in Italia, uno smottamento può trasformarsi in una grande frana“, sottolinea con una metafora geologica.
Secondo Monti “l’insofferenza profonda ha spesso caratterizzato l’atteggiamento dell’attuale governo quando la magistratura o la Corte dei Conti hanno sanzionato suoi atti. La coerenza propositiva è quella che lega tra loro più proposte del governo, accomunate dall’intento di depotenziare alcuni presìdi dello Stato di diritto, visti come inaccettabili ostacoli all’esecutivo”, ribadisce. “Mi riferisco – ha concluso Monti – alla riforma sul premierato intesa ad accrescere la governabilità e la legge elettorale recentemente presentata, con meccanismi intesi a rafforzare notevolmente la maggioranza“.

Therefore, I will vote no.” – that’s what former Prime Minister Mario Monti declared, taking a position on the referendum on justice in an interview with Corriere della Sera. For the lifetime senator, his decision to vote against the reform is “not ‘to punish the government, of which I have repeatedly emphasized certain merits’,” he stresses, and is also “not ‘to favor the opposition’,” “but ‘simply’ – he explains – for a reason that, in my opinion, is much more fundamental: that Italy continues to stand on the side of the rule of law, in the life of the country and in the international system.”

For Monti, “the only undeniable effect of the reform would be to shift the balance of power between the executive and the judiciary, in favor of the former.” The former premier states he is “very” concerned: “It can seem like a limited shift, at the border between two soils. But, as we know well in Italy, a shift can turn into a major landslide,” he emphasizes with a geological metaphor.

According to Monti, “deep intolerance has often characterized the attitude of the current government when the judiciary or the Court of Auditors have sanctioned its actions. The constructive approach is the one that links together more of the government’s proposals, united by the intention to depower certain safeguards of the rule of law, seen as unacceptable obstacles to the executive,” he reiterates. “I am referring – he concluded – to the premier-nominated reform, intended to increase governability and the recently presented electoral law, with mechanisms intended to significantly strengthen the majority.”
