Honestly I don't even know where to start, just speechless.

This is just sooo bad 😑

#TikTok and #Meta = pure evil:

"maximizes profits at the expense of their audience's wellbeing"

"told us that it's because the stock price is down"

"maintain a strong relationship" with political figures to avoid threats of regulation or bans"

"advice to parents with children using TikTok is: "Delete it, keep them as far away as possible from the app for as long as possible"

Meta and TikTok let harmful content rise after evidence outrage drove engagement - whistleblowers

Companies allowed more harmful content on user’s feeds, knowing their algorithms ran on outrage, BBC hears.

@madeindex Nothing new
@kxk3 We always kinda knew / suspected, but now it's confirmed and so much at once!

@madeindex @kxk3

I stopped using Facebook-- and YouTube, in any interactive or autoplay manner-- when I noticed they were TRYING to piss me off on purpose. The Prager U ads did it. 🀒 I mean, come ON. πŸ™„

And that was YEARS ago.

I don't understand how it's not searingly obvious and unbearable for everyone.

@violetmadder
Glad to have you here on the good side of the internet instead<3

We just need to keep the fedi propaganda up :)
@kxk3

@madeindex
"Nick said the reason for the prioritisation was that - in his view - the company ultimately cares less about children's safety than it does about maintaining a "strong relationship" with politicians and governments, to avoid regulations or bans which would harm its business."
This from the company that allegedly lobbies for and funds the push for ID verification, ostensibly to 'protect children' but really to harvest biometrics.

@MostlyTato @madeindex

Yes, exactly. The same companies. They sell the disease along with the "cure".

Step 1: dismantle anything effective that would protect children (like good moderation)

Step 2: cry, "OMG think of the children!"

Step 3: push the most draconian, invasive, dystopian supervillain shit imaginable.

I've been seeing sweet teenagers being brought on the news to talk sadly about how traumatized they are, and then they'll casually say something like, "Big tech is so dangerous-- excuse me, I mean *predatory* tech," and ALL the alarm bells in my head start going off.

As if anything could ever GET that big without being inherently predatory.

As if invasive surveillance and monopolistic, authoritarian power imbalances are not the real problem, and the attitude just needs a bit of tweaking. Making it sound so common-sense and necessary. Of COURSE your computer should collect all kinds of sensitive data the actual minute you take it out of the box and turn it on-- just not, you know, in a BAD way?

@violetmadder @madeindex
Indeed. They sell the cure for a disease they caused. And it's not even a cure, it's just a scam.
@MostlyTato hahah so on point! But this time with that new AI moderation everything will surely change - not ;) @violetmadder
@madeindex - Absolutely; Children and young adults have to be detoxed from TikTok.

@madeindex
No corporation has ever done anything altruistic. It is a myth. One cannot serve two masters, and their master is "shareholders", aka the 1%.

If they can get away with an evil yet profitable action, they MUST do it. There is no choice in their algorithmic profit maximizing natures, and their CEOs are slaves to this motive. Matters not if they're reluctant or eager for their dark deeds.

They and their owners must be muzzled and chained down to channel their greed towards public good.

@TrimTab Problem is those supposed to chain them down, are working hand in hand with them. Both sides would sell a child’s soul if they could get a penny for it ;)
@madeindex
Indeed you speek truth, it is a problem. But we vastly outnumber them. Change is inevitable, lets keep our heads up. :-)

@TrimTab I'm working on the change, hopefully I will be able to share the project this year :)

Are you by any chance knowledgeable about programming / tech or politics?

@madeindex
Programming is a past career of mine. Tech is my business. Politics - I can only say I'm interested in pragmatic level headed truth and honesty. Meaning I've gone my life without a political party. LOL
@madeindex
The new social media #UpScrolled is a much better alternative for most people. Although it's not as good as #Mastodon, but most people will always care about convenience over everything.
@madeindex outcry as poison conglomerate's poison revealed to be toxic and unfit for human consumption
@falcennial 😜 at least it's confirmed now, not just suspicion eh
@madeindex my friend, it was self-evident the entire time. this is not the first evidence. if you have missed it up until now that is likely going to be quite a big thing for you to come to terms with, but the fact that these websites systematically destroy human life quality has been publicly known for a very, very long time.
@falcennial I kinda knew a lot of that before, but the political considerations and the blunt internal reasoning were quiet shocking to me. :)
@madeindex yet more fuel for th argument that the pursuit of users under the guise of preventing online harms is victim-blaming, and the toothless regulators should have been equipped with a legal chainsaw to take to the social media companies.
