OH. "incursion" **that's*** what he's trying to say.

pfffft "excursion" like the army is going fell-walking for their constitutional or something.

(The US president keeps calling the war he started an "excursion" which... IDK. Odd word choice. )
@futurebird It’s got big 19th century colonialist energy.

@MisuseCase

Yeah. I thought it was some archaic BS. Has scramble for Africa vibes.

@futurebird Excursions are fun! Making tons of money by looting our Treasury is fun! The MIC billionaires are having a fun excursion with this war.

#fuckTrump #fuckMusk #fuckDOGE #fuckICE

@futurebird It’s what the early part of the US “involvement” in Vietnam was called, so, you know, great precedent.
@futurebird (yes, “incursion” - it’s a terrible word, but he’s a terrible person so they’re a perfect match)

@kpl

I've been reading more and I still can't find any reason why this needed to be done. Like even if I put on a realpolitik hat. And we've reached the limit of what can be done without the oh so infamous "boots on the ground"

We've also reached the limit of what can be done without an steady string of US casualties.

But you know? Let's just say "that's good enough" and leave right now. Great job everyone. Give out some medals and let's go home. Good lord.

@futurebird

It's breathtakingly bad, there's no justification.

Trump thinks he's going to live forever, he's trying to lock down his oil access (see also Venezuela) and get back into empire expansion.

It serves a lot of additional purposes: distracts everyone from midterms, war profiteering, gives his fanbase something they like to help them forget he's a pedophile & rapist. Hegseth is already using it to try to expand white christian nationalism in the USmil.

@kpl

@futurebird I agree. There was no reason to go in other than Iran was already weakened and Trump and Netanyahu are both bullies in need of distractions.

I’m most scared that on the US side this is driven by End Times Christian nut jobs in the administration who won’t let this end until they get their “final battle.”

@futurebird it's a bit archaic, but 'excursion' does also have the meaning of 'a raid into foreign territory without a formal declaration of war'. It's entirely possible a member of staff used the term in that meaning and he's picked it up.

@PeteKirkham

OK. But it sounds really dated how old was that staffer? 200?

@futurebird I don't know about US usage, but I think I recognised it from writing software for training UK army officers around 2005.
@futurebird Maybe he means "distraction", like from the Epstein Files?
@futurebird "Foreign adventures" sounds too much like a compliment, but "excursion" makes it sound like the sailors and marines are out there for a week of shore liberty, not an actual war that has shooting people and exploding stuff. (basically yes, weird choice of phrase)
@futurebird Coming soon: Change the name of DoD again to "Dept. of Excursions"

@futurebird

It doesn't quiet roll of the tongue as nicely as Putin's «специальная военная операция» though.

@futurebird

For some reason that brings to mind this song to me … Excursion Around the Bay - Great Big Sea

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7IQwX8y2K3A

@futurebird I once went on a excursion, It was a coach day trip to Llandudno! Standerwick (the coach company) called that an excursion.
