Donald Tusk is mainstreaming the fringe far-right idea of Polexit to instrumentally use it in the next elections – to try and scare people away from voting on PiS.

This will massively backfire, just as mainstreaming Brexit massively backfired in the UK.

There is no lack of reasons not to vote for PiS. Instead of mainstreaming this dangerous crap, Tusk could focus on literally anything else.

@rysiek Yeah, I was thinking Brexit when I read the first sentence. Just...what? Unless you already want to leave the EU.

@rysiek it's been going SO WELL for the UK!!!

#brexit #dumbasses #EU #Poland #MAGAts

@rysiek Was it really fringe before though? PiS was increasingly open about it back when it was the government. So has been a large part of the increasingly popular right.

@marcink it is fringe – just check which political parties *explicitly* call for it or make it a part of their official program.

PiS, and even some parties to the right of PiS, are of course winking towards it, and keep blaming the EU for every possible evil, but they do not *explicitly* call for Polexit.

Yes, Polexit is creeping into mainstream politics in Poland, and has been for years. But explicitly mentioning it by the PM is a great way to speed that mainstreaming up.

@rysiek I don't get it - if I understand correctly he's saying that the far right are planning that, right? I don't follow Polish politics. are you saying he's making it up?

@gotofritz Polexit is still pretty fringe, by far most Poles are strongly for staying in the EU.

Far-right parties are gradually more openly talking about Polexit, and the right-wing major party, PiS, is winking towards the idea.

PM Tusk, by talking about it, is making that suddenly a very mainstream subject. Even though he opposes it, he is trying to exploit it for political gains over PiS. This is a great way of putting it front-and-center in political debate.

@rysiek I see, got it, thanks!

@rysiek i believe Monsieur Tusk, who otherwise seems clear sighted, also enjoys promoting X Corp in our democratic discourse. That hasn't backfired either.

But hey you get an amazing "reach" and that's what counts isn't it? #leaveX

How X’s algorithm shifts political attitudes

Algorithms curate what users of social media see, raising concerns that they may distort attitudes and affect social and political outcomes. This column reports on an experiment conducted on X in the US in 2023, in which users were randomly assigned to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed significantly shifted political opinions in a pro-Republican direction, while switching the algorithm off had no comparable effect. This asymmetry arose because the algorithm affected which accounts users chose to follow, leaving a lasting imprint on their information environment even after algorithmic curation was removed.
