A new European consortium led by Volla is creating UnifiedAttestation, an open-source alternative to Google's Play Integrity API 📱.

This would enable secure payments and sensitive apps on Google-free custom ROMs, reducing dependency on proprietary US infrastructure and advancing user sovereignty 🔒.

Paying without Google: New consortium wants to remove custom ROM hurdles

Using banking and payment apps on Android smartphones with custom ROMs is a problem: A European industry consortium now wants to change that.

@GrapheneOS Hard for me to understand why you oppose to it, since the other way of pushing Big Techs to behave better will never happen.

I'm on your side anyway, so your point must be solid. Keep up the good work.

@knoppix95 European companies forming an anti-competitive cartel which permits their insecure products while forbidding GrapheneOS and most other options isn't a good thing. Android has a standard hardware attestation API which can be used to permit arbitrary alternate operating systems. What they're doing is making another phony system for supposedly checking security while in reality permitting their insecure products and locking out arbitrary competition. It's unethical and illegal.

@GrapheneOS Ah so this thing has still a way to limit freedom on smartphones? Thought it would be open... So it's the same way of seeing things as Chat Control. "The goal is to protect/open something" but kills freedom instead

Sadly I thought we found a way to make NFC payments a thing in GrapheneOS...

@knoppix95 NFC payments are already supported on GrapheneOS. If you're in Europe there are multiple options for it including Curve Pay for the whole EEA and the UK, PayPal within Germany and a bunch of banks supporting it without using Google Pay as other banks do.

Unified Attestation is nothing more than a thin layer on top of Android hardware attestation to give a few companies control of what's allowed to be used. It's inherently biased and unfair as the intent is permitting their products.

@GrapheneOS @knoppix95 Do you have a list of banks in Germany supporting GrapheneOS ?
