Darn, this #macos and #exFAT easter egg bit me again.

Trying to rsync files from one external drive (APFS) to another one (exFAT) slows down before my eyes. from 900kB/s to 600 kB/2 in a couple of hours. 1,1 Tb of data, millions of files and moving the files to an external exFAT formatted drive seems like a mission impossible with no heroes around.

F...ck.

@[email protected] As it turns out it was about the filesystem format. While exFAT supports millions of files per dir and huge partitions, #macos writing to #exFAT is just very slow (and also appears to slow down the more you write). Reformatting external disks with #APFS made a huge difference - maybe 10 times faster writes and no slowing down during the huge 7z file extraction process. Extraction toos 5-6 days to exFAT formatted disk and only 6 hours to APFS formatted disk.

Restarting the rsync from the beginning takes roughly 1-2 hours extra for the comparison.

I'm gonna give up and just hand over the one huge 7z file and let the reciver extract it. I'm literally running out of time.

@rpsu I guess the same just happened to me! I didn't know that was a thing with exFAT.
