Yesterday we hiked the red rock slot canyon at Walatowa (Jemez Pueblo). It's a very short, easy hike with a substantial permit fee ($13/ea) but it's beautiful, definitely worth seeing.

@akkana

Wow. Well-named.

@akkana
The family would walk up there when I was a young teen. There was nothing anywhere around. Later the Pueblo closed it off completely. I guess vandals and jerks were taking advantage. Glad it is open again.
@bosquebill Glad to hear about pueblos opening up previously closed trails. We've pleaded with the tribes up here to reopen some of the trails we used to hike that they've since closed, with no luck yet, but maybe they'll come around some day.
@akkana Very cool! I'm surprised I've never heard of it. Bummer about the fee, though...
@drdirtbag I hadn't heard of it either. I vaguely knew there were some trails there, and had always meant to go check them out, but had no idea there was a slot canyon. One of our hiking group happened to spot a New Mexican article about it, https://www.santafenewmexican.com/news/adventure/red-rocks-trails-and-walatowa-slot-canyon-offer-a-captivating-hike-in-jemez-pueblo/article_57e9d522-0e32-4365-85a7-316b471d969f.html
Red Rocks Trails and Walatowa Slot Canyon offer a captivating hike in Jemez Pueblo

A new adventure park with mountain bike trails and a disc golf course is in the works, and the pueblo is looking to expand its guided tour offerings.
