The latest lava fountaining episode of an erupting Hawaii volcano shot 400 metres high Tuesday, prompting temporary closures at a national park and part of an important highway because of falling volcanic fragments, including ash.

From the V1 cam earlier. These are not snowflakes gently falling down, they are rocks !

It is called Tephra. as magma rises, it is like when you open a bottle fo 7up. Bubbles opf mostly sulfur emerge and create a very frothy magma (expanding its volume and thus speed as it rises up). One in the air, chunks of laba start to solidify as very foamy and light rocks: tephra.
