Home Office refuses to exempt exceptional students from tough immigration rules

"The home secretary suspended student visas for applicants from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan last week, saying she was “taking the unprecedented decision to refuse visas for those nationals seeking to exploit our generosity"

All outstanding Chevening applications from the four countries were cancelled and candidates informed that their applications had been terminated"

I have literally no words for the vindictive cruelty of this.

Sudanese and Afghan students with offers to study in UK say government’s ‘emergency brake’ is discriminatory

The students – five from Sudan and one from Afghanistan – have undergraduate degrees in medicine and science-based subjects and received offers from universities including Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London.

However, this month the home secretary, Shabana Mahmood, announced a ban on student visas for people from Sudan, Afghanistan, Myanmar and Cameroon, which will come into force on 26 March.

@afewbugs clearly those candidates, should they eventually settle in the U.K. and naturalise, are way too smart to vote for Labour. Better not let them in at all.
@afewbugs Meanwhile, fee-paying schools (Eton, Harrow, etc) are treated as "Charities", and are exempt from taxes. Can't let people scrounge, unless they can afford to bribe the state!

@afewbugs I hope someone sues us for the costs they have already incurred before the government cancelled visas.

And maybe one of the big rich universities like Oxford should sue the government for the costs they have wasted and had to cancel on student places.

Maybe if more institutions fought back and made the government pay for all their shitty last minute costly decisions they'd stop doing it to flirt with Reform voters.

@afewbugs, I thought this was about the US.
@j9t our governments are all busily stealing all of each other's most horrible ideas right now 😢
