Grounded Dreams: Ikarus 451 - The Supersonic Mirage of the Prone-Pilot Fighter - Vintage Aviation News
The Yugoslav Ikarus 451 was an experimental aircraft designed in the early 1950s to test a prone pilot position that could help aviators tolerate higher G-forces. Flight tests showed the concept worked aerodynamically, allowing pilots to withstand up to 9 Gs. However, breathing difficulties, poor cockpit visibility and the emergence of anti-G suits made the concept impractical, and the program shifted toward conventional aircraft development.
