Delighted to see the Tobacco and Vapes Bill 2024-2026 (UK) pass through the House of Lords - overcoming much Big Tobacco interference, obstruction and contestation. Baroness Gillian Merron for Labor commented on this landmark bill: 'Smoking is the number one preventable cause of death, disability and ill health and tobacco claims around 80,000 lives every year. While tobacco remains the greatest threat, this legislation is about protecting future generations from the harms of not only tobacco but nicotine addiction.'

‘Landmark’ bill preventing future generations from buying tobacco a step closer to becoming law

People born before 1 January 2009 will never be able to buy tobacco under legislation that has passed the House of Lords.

'Whether the UK will achieve a “smokefree generation” is not guaranteed. The legislation will need to be backed by effective enforcement, sustained investment in local public health services and continued support for smoking cessation once it becomes law.'

'Even so, it represents a significant step forward. The policy is grounded in prevention, supported by public opinion and informed by decades of tobacco control research and practice. If enforcement and cessation support keep pace with legislative ambition, the UK has reason to be cautiously optimistic that this could mark the beginning of a long-term endgame for tobacco.' #smoking #vaping #tobacco #health #healthcare #healthlaw #UKpol #UKlaw

The UK is about to start an experiment that could end smoking for good – but it won’t be easy

A generational sales ban could transform smoking rates. Success depends on enforcement, funding and resisting industry pressure.

Come on England, do keep up.
@drrimmer wasn't WA and Vic planning to do something similar about 6 years ago?
@skribe WA and Tasmania and SA have talked about tobacco endgame laws - but not acted on the proposals. NZ passed a tobacco endgame bill under Jacinda Ardern - but it was repealed under conservative coalition.
