Alberta, where it turns out that cutting off your nose to spite your face really is bad for business. Alberta separation talk already affecting more than a quarter of surveyed Calgary businesses | CBC News

Ongoing discourse around the prospect of Alberta separation is emerging as a top concern for Calgary businesses, many of whom say the debate is already impacting the local economy, a new Calgary Chamber of Commerce survey suggests.

@Paulatics

Please. I want to stay a part of Canada. Why is this even a discussion these days 😔😭

@Paulatics it’s kind of hard to hold my head up high when talking with my American friends about how dumb this period of history is.

I don’t believe for a second that this is a grass roots campaign. I dont believe it’s completly a domestic campaign either. Senator, I would hope that you and others are talking a national security lens on this.

Foreign influence commissioner could monitor an Alberta referendum on separation | CBC News

Canada's new foreign influence watchdog says his mandate will include attempts by foreign agents to interfere at the provincial and municipal level across Canada, including any attempt on behalf of a foreign government to influence a referendum on Alberta separation.

@Paulatics you are the best. Thank you for your focus and your transparency
@Paulatics the movers and shakers of the oil patch need to step up and let Danielle know she’s playing with fire

@Paulatics

I'm surprised the CPC hasn't stepped into the debate. After all, if Alberta separates Parliament will be 34 seats smaller, 33 of which are conservative seats.
With the loss of the Alberta conservative stronghold, the CPC will never be elected to govern ever again.

@ScribblersEmporium (Alberta currently has two Liberal MPs and one NDP. But I take your point.)

@Paulatics

I stand corrected. Thank you.

@ScribblersEmporium @Paulatics oh god. Don’t make me steel man this argument!
@Paulatics As a Quebecer that voted against separation in the last referendum, all I can do is laugh. I mean come on, even if there was a majority vote to separate, all of Alberta is First Nations Treaty & Unceded Land.

@ianrogers @Paulatics

It's ceded land, not unceded, except for the reserves. That's what the treaties are about.

But, yes, the First Nations certainly have a lot to say about this, and from what I hear they're not on board.

@Paulatics

“Premier Danielle Smith has repeatedly said she supports a "sovereign Alberta within a united Canada."”

I have repeatedly said I support “squadrons of flying elephants within an effective Canadian Air Force.”

Repeatedly saying something makes it come true, right? Or is that only when wearing ruby slippers? Has anyone checked Smith’s footwear recently? <there’s no place like home…there’s no place like home…there’s no place…>

@DavidM_yeg @Paulatics

Every time I hear Our Danielle say that, I don't know whether to laugh or cringe. She's quoting a line about Quebec separatists wanting "a free and sovereign Quebec within a strong and united Canada." Trouble is the line was composed by a comedian.

@Paulatics

On the bright side, when the head offices start to leave Alberta, the property values will drop, making housing more affordable.
