As I was tucking by 4 year old son into bed, he asked me why I don't like AI. I could tell he sincerely wanted to know, so I tried to answer as best I could.

I responded that I'm not against all AI, but I don't like how it is currently being used by a lot of people. I don't like it when people pass off AI generated things as real. And I think AI is bad for the plants and animals. We talked about how our laptop gets warm when we play videogames and how data centers can be as big as grocery stores and generate lots of heat. I also mentioned how current AI models tend not to give credit to the people whose data it trained on.

Then he asked me if there is more than one AI. I love that question! I said yes. Then he asked me what AIs do I like. I said I like small models that you can run on your own compute. He wanted to know which ones. Thankfully I had just been doing research into open source AI models. I said I like the Olmo AI model which has open data and the Apertus model. He asked me if I had used them, and I said not much yet. I said I have used the Mistral model which I also like but not as much because it's data is not open (as far as I can tell).

That seemed to satisfy him for now, and he turned over to sleep.

I love how kids can ask challenging questions. It forces me to examine why I believe what I do. I am grateful for that.
